Page 6 August 2013 There’s much to like about ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ Much Ado About Nothing Director: Joss Whedon Starring: Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Sean Maher, and Nathan Fillion Joss Whedon’s rendition of Shakespeare’s play is funny, entertaining and beautifully filmed. A modern take on the play Much Ado About Nothing takes place at the home of Messina’s governor, Leonato (Clark Gregg). Residing with him are his daughter, Hero (Jillian Morgese), and his niece, Beatrice (Acker). Visiting Leonato are his friend Don Pedro (Reed Diamond), his officers Benedick (Denisof) and Claudio (Fran Kranz), his rebellious brother, Don John (Maher), and two of Don John’s associates. From there, it follows the typical formula of one of Shakespeare’s romantic comedies: falling in love, battles of wit, misunderstandings, a bit of drama, and plenty of humor. The list of reasons to see this film is endless, but here are the top eight: 1. Joss Whedon adapted the play for the screen and directed the movie. Whedon has cleverly edited the script, which usually becomes a roughly three-hour performance on stage, into an average-length film. Thanks to Whedon’s skill in writing and directing, the audience doesn’t feel like they’ve missed anything. 2. It’s a modern adaptation set in current times. Modernized Shakespeare plays have been done countless times, but this one stands out. 3. The setting for the entire movie was Joss Whedon’s incredible home in Santa Monica, Calif. While this may only seem like a useless bit of trivia, it is actually Whedon’s way of making filmgoers jealous. It’s no wonder he chose to film it there, as it’s a Spanish-style dream house. 4. Nathan Fillion as Dogberry.
