OK, that’s advertising hyperbole, but it’s a big deal. Twinkies are back. Even though I hadn’t eaten one in years, I missed seeing Twinkies on the store shelf. Too much of lost childhood for me. The new cakes, back after a bankruptcy- caused hiatus, are smaller by a smidge than the previous incarnation and have fewer calories because of it. They now are just 20 calories or so more than the average-sized apple, although I’ve never heard that one Hostess sponge cake a day will keep the doctor away. And in a sacrifice for you, good reader, I can report that they taste the same as I remember. At least I think they do. Lost childhood also means foggy memory. So get out there and support your Twinkie fix if you are so inclined. And if you can find them. It took four stops to find a store that still had a supply less than a week after the rollout in mid-July. Guess there are a lot of folks with fond memories of Twinkies. s s s Can you believe this month’s meeting of the Arcadia News Book Club will be its 16th? Those 16 months certainly flew by, but I know that the group has a lot of fun. So much so that the club has outgrown another venue and is moving to Saguaro Library. One of the major differences between this and other book groups is the chance to meet the author each month via SKYPE. That alone makes it worth trying out if you’re interested in joining a book club, and the new digs mean plenty of room for newcomers. s s s Speaking of reading ...
