By Amanda Goossen Last year, when the Phoenix Public Market closed its doors, die-hard fans wondered what would become of this popular corner and gathering spot in downtown Phoenix. The perfect locale for such events as Food Truck Fridays and the Saturday Open Air Market, it seemed that downtown not only was losing a great restaurant and market, but a cultural haven. In May, however, the team responsible for St. Fr a ncis rest au r a nt (Aa ron Chamberlin, David Chamberlain and Amy Del Real), decided to breathe new life into the location. Deciding to keep the name and work in conjunction with the landlord to continue use of the outdoor space for regular popular events, the team worked to create a new look and feel. Phoenix Public Market has added ‘Café to its name, changed the food and the agenda to become a casual meeting place with great food, coffee and take-away meals in a comfortable, hip atmosphere suited to the area. “Aaron Chamberlain wanted to help with the growth of this downtown community,” said manager Amy Del Real. “He grew up here, but has lived in New York and San Francisco and has taken a lot of his inspiration from those locations and their own outdoor markets.” Phoenix Public Market Café is now home to a beautiful coffee bar, not only serving up delicious Cartel Coffee, but designed with diner-like bar stools and flat screen televisions. Serving local wine and beer, the space offers superb daily happy- hour specials, making it the ultimate stop- off any night of the week. Using local purveyors such as Crow’s Dairy, Hayden Flour Mill and Bianco’s tomatoes, as well as hosting a small market area that sells products from area companies like Maya’s Flowers, Refresh Glass Project, Dapper and Dash and Millie’s Caramels, Phoenix Public Market is the go-to spot to support local businesses. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in style with delicious plates of The Devil’s Mess (eggs, farm vegetables, Schreiner’s chorizo and chiles), frittata (farmer’s market vegetables, arugula and pesto), steel cut oats risotto, the AZ Burger (green chile, lettuce, cheddar, house dressing), The Chopped Mediterranean (greens, garbanzo beans, shaved red onion, olives, Crow’s Dairy feta, sherry vinaigrette), Pork Chile Verde Pot Pie (house-baked in a flaky crust) and rotisserie chicken (slowly cooked over a hardwood fire), along with a variety of other options. The seating area of the Phoenix Public Market is adorned with large farmhouse tables, rustic lighting and an open ceiling. An extra space is home to comfortable bench seating and white fluffy pillows. On my most recent visit, the space was filled with hungry lunchtime locals, as well as dedicated students and a group of men looking to grab a good cup of coffee and a great plate of eggs. “Everything is built to be done quickly. We want to be a place you can stop by for lunchtime or on your way home. We want to make it easy,” Amy said. The grab-and-go salads are a terrific choice. The fresh squeezed juices are an outstanding way to start your day, and the rotisserie meats are absolutely unprecedented in this city. A pastry team bakes each evening, developing intense flavor in even the most ordinary. For example, the Blondie isn’t your typical Blondie, but drizzled with caramel and rosemary. It’s a stunning addition to an already delectable treat. Overall, the Phoenix Public Market is a smaller version of the big city outdoor markets reminiscent of Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.
