Coordinating child care, or even having the energy for a workout, can put a damper on the most dedicated mom’s fitness efforts. So this fall, with older children going back to school, Arcadia moms look for creative ways to exercise. Although most nearby gyms provide child care, many moms don’t feel comfortable leaving their children with strangers. And, in a mother’s time-starved world, some prefer the accountability and intensity of working with a personal trainer instead of by themselves at home or in the gym—even with their little ones in tow. “Incorporating my kiddos into my workout is so much fun. They have a blast. I get a tough workout in while spending quality time with my kids,” said Stephanie Verdoorn of Paradise Valley, mom of Megan, 3, and Daniel, 5. “It’s a fun way to pass on my passion for a healthy lifestyle by sweating and laughing shoulder to shoulder with them.” Many personal trainers will happily incorporate little ones into the workout. Exercises can include squats while holding the baby for extra weight, bicep curling and then shoulder pressing them into the air. Other examples are planks, primal crawls and brief sprints with a child piggyback. Other moms even use technology to get their workouts in with their kids. With the popularity of Skype and Facetime, moms can welcome personal trainers into their homes on a flexible schedule. Kids and babies can be a part of the workout, or simply be taking a nap, or playing with toys. “Working with my trainer on Skype is like having her walk through the front door,” said Lisa Kok, mom of three young children. “The intensity is all there but I don’t have to pack up three kids.” “Sometimes I’ll be chest pressing my son while he laughs and giggles, and then maybe he’ll lose interest and go play,” said Kok. “Either way I’m able to get my time in and my kids see that health and fitness is a priority.” Andrea Barkley is a Certified Personal Trainer working with Phoenix residents to help discover their best self, one bicep curl at a time. Andrea Barkley trains local mom, Kathy McElvogue.
Page 35 August 2013 On the first day of the cruise, the two spent time relaxing, unpacking, exploring the ship and making friends with their dining-table mates. Upon docking at Catalina Island on the second day, Fisher and Kalil rented a golf cart and spent two hours touring the island on their own, taking plenty of photos along the way. They also did some shopping and enjoyed some local seafood and wine. When they returned to the ship, Fisher and Kalil browsed the art gallery and tried their luck at guessing the price of a painting for a contest. “I ended up guessing correctly and won two paintings and a bottle of champagne,” Fisher said. “Then, we continued our night with our new friends at dinner before our group went on to a comedy club afterwards with some late night dancing that ended sometime in the morning.” On the third day, Fisher and Kalil tiredly ventured to Encinitas to see La Bufadora, a large, natural blowhole that spouts up seawater as the result of air being trapped underneath. They joined the locals in eating different kinds of tacos and sipping coconut water. They later enjoyed some miniature golf and an art auction for their last afternoon on the ship before heading to dinner. “A couple at our table got engaged, so we all celebrated with champagne,” Fisher said. “Then, Mike and I sat on the deck looking out at sea while we enjoyed our bottle of champagne we had won and said ‘goodbye’ to the sea.” Fisher said she would recommend the cruise. “But it goes by fast and you don’t have a lot of time in each port,” she said. “I’d prefer a longer cruise next time.” Fisher and Kalil said they wished they had zip-lined in either Catalina or Encinitas, spent more time in the city of Encinitas and likely would plan a water activity in either port their next go-around. One thing they were completely satisfied with was the food offered onboard. “One favorite was the chicken tenders for both of us,” Fisher said. “My favorite dish was the duck I had one night for dinner, and Mike’s was the endless fresh seafood dishes he consumed in bulk.” They’re hoping to plan a trip solely to Catalina Island in the near future. “It was beautiful and romantic,” Fisher said. Fisher and Kalil also are planning a Grand Canyon Railway trip for Mike’s birthday in a few months. Mike Kalil is Arcadia News writer Kaley Kalil’s twin brother. Traveled lately?
