Page 12 August 2013 Chicken pox can mean shingles, too By Heather O’Toole, M.D. If you’ve ever had chicken pox, you’re at risk of developing a painful skin disease called shingles. That’s because after you recover from chicken pox, the herpes zoster virus that caused it remains dormant in your body for the rest of your life. The virus can reactivate years later to cause shingles, which is most common in individuals age 60 and older. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports there are an estimated one million cases annually in the United States. Shingles erupts as a painful rash on the face or body, typically just on one side. In the days before the rash develops, individuals with shingles may feel tingling, pain and itching on the site where the rash will appear. Later, the rash forms blisters that scab over before clearing up. Shingles sufferers also may experience headaches, fever and chills and stomach distress. If you have a compromised immune system, you’re at risk of complications from shingles. Complications can include more widespread rashes, secondary infections and even hearing or vision loss, depending on the area of the body affected. Continued on page 18 D.
