The book, by Arcadia News publisher Greg Bruns and published by Arcadia Publishing (no relation to the paper), chronicles the history of the area from the late 1880s through present time. “It’s been an interesting journey,” Bruns said of the project. “The historic organizations have some images, but it’s difficult to come across something we haven’t seen in other publications.” The key was to tap into the neighborhood’s well-deserved reputation for sense of ownership. “We’ve had the most success reaching out to our community,” he said. “It’s gratifying to see the pride and enthusiasm that Arcadia residents have in our community.” An Arcadia native, Bruns had little trouble convincing himself to write the book. “I have always been fascinated with the trees, green grass, large lots and distinctive character of the neighborhood,” he said. “When the publisher came to me to ask if we knew anyone who wanted to write about the history of Arcadia, it was pretty clear that this was a ‘must-do’ project.” The process, however, proved to be more daunting than Bruns had imagined. “The research has been fun, although it’s easy to get distracted,” he said. “It’s sort of like going back to college, although the stakes are higher.” College history classes were great, so I figure the book will be, too. Neighbors’ contributions should lend a “photo album” feel that will be interesting. The book will be available at several retail outlets, online and at the Arcadia News office. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, there are some fascinating stories in this month’s paper. I remember Jimmy Arwood when he was in Little League, and now the young man is running for President. Well, President at Boys Nation anyway. His story is on page 18. There’s also a new little library in town (page 15), a deck of cards featuring Phoenix history (page 32) ... too many stories to detail all of the good ones here. Enjoy reading them, and thanks for spending time with the Arcadia News .
