Page 44 July 2013 By Jacob Green For the second year, the Musical Instrument Museum will grant Arizona K-12 educators the opportunity to explore the museum for free during July. The initiative is intended to provide educators a way to introduce the arts into their curriculum, despite cuts that have been made to arts education programs across Arizona. “At MIM, we believe educators are both leaders in their communities and vital partners of the museum,” said education manager Carly Ofsthun. Two Teachers’ Preview Days will be offered on July 20 and July 21, giving educators the opportunity to enjoy live performances, as well as receive information about school fi eld-trip opportunities, pre- and post-visit curricula, and Artist Residency Programs. “When informal educational institutions such as MIM unite with formal educators, our mutual goal of a strong, informed community is greatly enhanced,” Ofsthun said. The museum offers educational opportunities in such subjects as music, geography, social studies and science. The free admission is extended to Arizona teachers, school and district administrators, registered student teachers, teacher aides and homeschool educators. MIM offers free days for educators arcadiadaily.com Mobile facial salon brings services By Danika Worthington Alysha’s Esthetic brings such spa and salon services as waxing, facials and makeup to Arcadia homes. “It’s just more comfortable,” Alysha Cowgill said of her mobile business. “Like say (after) the microdermabrasion or chemical peel, sometimes you’re real red or you can’t go into the sun right afterwards. “So you’re already at home and no one sees you looking crazy.” Microdermabrasion is a process in which a diamond tip is used to remove the outer layer of dead skin, and a chemical peel is a similar process but with a chemical solution instead of a diamond tip, according to Deseret Aesthetic & Lifestyle Institute. If a client does not have space for the mobile esthetic service, Cowgill has a room in her Arcadia home for clients to use. The spa day doesn’t have to be a solo experience either. Cowgill provides A-Peeling Parties for clients and their friends. Jamie Cowgill, Alysha’s aunt, hosted an A-Peeling Party for eight friends at her home. With mimosas and wine in hand, the women each had 30 minutes to an hour with Alysha or the other cosmeticist working the event. “Some of the other gals had just regular facials,” Jamie Cowgill said. “A couple had chemical peels and some of the gals got microdermabrasions, and they all came out of the little room glowing.” Mobile spas became a national trend in 2005, according to SpaFinder Wellness. Home parties, such as the A-Peeling Party, are commonly used for baby and wedding showers.
