Joyce Jonovich Photos by Heather Kinkel By Amanda Goossen At the Jonovich home in Arcadia, it wouldn’t quite be the Fourth of July without Chocolate Chippy Ice Cream. It’s simply tradition. Joyce Jonovich grew up in Michigan. To her family, the patriotic holiday meant boating on the lake, fireworks, watermelon, bare feet and stubbed toes. Her husband, however, had a different experience. “Greg grew up in Phoenix. His family always made homemade ice cream and sat on the roof to watch fireworks,” Joyce said. “Back then, firework shows could be seen all over the city.” Thirty-five years ago, when Greg and Joyce were married, they agreed that homemade ice cream would become a Fourth of July tradition for their family. Now, with three grown children and 11 grandchildren, America’s birthday is important to them all. “We spend the day in the pool, we barbecue and watch the firework show done nearby at the Arizona Country Club,” Joyce said. And this year, a new element will be added to the fun. “We are going to set up a movie screen and use an outdoor projector to show ‘The Sandlot.’ I’m hoping this will become a yearly event for our family, to go with the ice cream.” As Joyce prepares the ice cream mixture, her love for the family recipe is apparent. She looks at the old Dolly Madison Family Fun Ice Cream Book, falling apart from decades of use and points out the handwritten changes she’s made over the years. “I’m extremely careful of cooking the eggs to the right temperature,” she said. “I add the vanilla at the end when the pan is removed from the heat. Heating the vanilla causes it to lose some of its flavor.” Stirring and measuring, the oversized ice cream maker is sitting on the counter waiting for her to pour the mixture inside. “When I was growing up, my parents had an ice cream maker that had a hand crank on the side. It was terrible to use,” Joyce said. “When my husband mentioned this tradition I was horrified that I’d be cranking the machine for hours.” The oversized maker sitting on the Jonovich counter is void of a handle. Joyce couldn’t be more thrilled. The Chocolate Chippy recipe has been designed by Joyce’s modifications to the vanilla recipe in her old cookbook. Chocolate was chosen because it’s her husband’s favorite. “Greg is a chocoholic,” she said. “And we call it Chocolate Chippy because I melt one cup of the chocolate chips and leave a half cup to be added at the end. The chips slightly melt and break apart, but not completely, making it chippy.” And for her 5-year-old grandson who is galactosemic (a rare genetic metabolic disorder that affects an individual’s ability to metabolize the sugar galactose properly) and can’t have any milk products, a special treat is always on the menu. “I make him sorbet. And each year, more of the other kids are enjoying it as well,” Joyce said.
