Few people have stepped on foreign land and felt so lost. All that changed, however, on the fourth day of the trip when I fell upon a German Christmas festival. People were celebrating. Laughter filled the air. And brats were being grilled to perfection. It was a party, and brats were the stars of the show. After three days of odd food and all things unfamiliar to this all-American girl, I was in heaven. So imagine my thrill when The Brat Haus opened in Old Town Scottsdale in the space that once housed Oregano’s. Sentimental as I am, I was excited to visit a spot that was not only casual and cool, but had a menu that promised pretzels, brats and beer, my favorite parts of that trip. Owned by local restaurateur Dave Andrea and Chef Payton Curry, former chef of Caffe Boa Bistro, the men shared their individual knowledge and skills to create great food and atmosphere. “After being out of the business for a few years I came upon the opportunity to take over the original Oregano’s space and just knew I had to do something with it,” Andrea said. What he’s done is exciting. Walking into The Brat Haus, guests will notice there are choices to be made right off the bat. Would you like to sit in the hip-and-happening patio area with strings of lights and a spectacularly colorful and unique mural painted on the wall, or in one of the two indoor spaces, each inviting and comfortable? With dark wood, both in the form of individual tables and picnic tables, the rooms call for a gathering of sorts whether with your 12 closest friends or the love of your life. The menu may be burgers and brats, but that doesn’t mean it lacks pizzazz. Handmade brats are spiced to perfection. The Haus Brat has parsley, oregano and allspice. The Spicy Brat is with cayenne, paprika and crushed pepper and the Southwest Chicken is made extra special with roasted chilles, cumin and cilantro. Other meat choices range from Moroccan lamb, rabbit and duck. Each brat is served on a crunchy French roll and topped with one topping: sauerkraut, spicy peppers, root beer onions, pickle relish, apricot onion chutney or pickled red onions. The pretzels are a must-have. Served with a selection of mustards or a three-cheese-beer dipping sauce, no matter how many you eat, you’ll wish you had one more. They are perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, and the salt is done just right. The German potato salad contains sauerkraut, smoked fingerling potatoes and Haus Bacon. The tartness of the kraut and the salty, crunch of the bacon make this plate an ideal comfort food. If joining a group, the Charcuterie platters are an ideal choice. Served with toasted bread and mustards, selections range from sliced sausage and crumbled blue cheese to Haus bacon-wrapped dates and sliced pears and bee pollen. A Whole Pig is also an option for the group. Take it home or enjoy it in-Haus. With a little notice, Chef Curry will roast an entire pig for you and your friends, served family style with four sides. With 30 craft beers on tap and another 40 in bottles and cans, The Brat Haus admits “We didn’t create a beer list to complement our food…we created our food to show off the beer.” And for the kids there are a variety of vintage bottled sodas. The adults, however, can also find joy in these specialty sodas. “We like featuring items you don’t see very often or that invoke a memory from another place. Our bottled sodas bring back lots of childhood memories for many of our guests,” Andrea said The Brat Haus slogan states: “The Art of Swine Dining.” To me, it’s a comfort place, with comfort food. I most definitely will be back.
