Page 37 July 2013 Cards Continued from page 32 address. The set currently is being sold at the Phoenix Art Museum and on Amazon. com for $10 a set. So far, about 100 sets have been sold. Much of her inspiration comes from father and role model Robert Melikian, a real estate lawyer and author of Vanishing Phoenix , a collection of 200 photographs that depict some of Phoenix’s most remarkable landmarks. The book discusses the significance and memories of once- standing landmarks such as the Fox Theater, Clark Churchill House and Kon Tiki Hotel. Melikian said as many as 50 percent of the historical landmarks in downtown Phoenix have been torn down to accommodate new commercial buildings and other business plans. After his father became the owner of the famous San Carlos Hotel in 1973, he decided to advocate preserving Phoenix’s history. “It’s a tragedy and people don’t realize how much has been lost,” Melikian said. “These landmarks are like time machines that can teach us a lot about the past and about ourselves. I want them to stand for future generations.” Melikian said his daughter has always felt a special connection to the San Carlos Hotel. “She sees history and historical buildings as a connection between people.” After Alexandra enrolled in a photography course at PCDS she decided to play her own role in preserving the city’s history. Rather than focusing on buildings that have been torn down, she focused on ones still standing. “I’ve always been pretty interested in photography,” Alexandra said. “I wanted to take these pictures to show the potential Phoenix has. The buildings have a lot of historical meaning.” According to her website, Alexandra plans to donate 5 percent of the cost of a deck to the Arizona Preservation Foundation, a nonprofit historic preservation organization. Some of Alexandra’s favorite cards include the San Carlos Hotel, the Arizona Biltmore and the Rosson House Museum. Being able to see the different ways people have used the cards has also been one of her favorite parts of the entire process. “I didn’t realize it would actually take off the way it has,” she said. “For the most part, people are surprised that I made playing cards because I am only 17. It’s not something an average teenager does.” Now, Alexandra is brainstorming ideas for her next historical card set. She said she hopes to incorporate some different cities from around Arizona and create card sets for different states. “Alexandra’s project is amazing and the cards are so professional looking,” said Gina Bridgeman, communications director at PCDS. “She deserves to have her story told.” One appointment. Upon a person’s death, the named beneficiary can record a death certificate and obtain title to the property. Probate is not needed. Without a Beneficiary Deed, real property needs to be probated unless it is held in trust. The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable until the owner dies or if there are two owners, until the last owner dies. The Beneficiary Deed is a great tool for people who do not want to have a trust and have “pay on death” designations on their accounts. The Beneficiary Deed is not a good tool to leave real property to more than three people or to minors or to adults with special needs receiving government assistance. Contact Sharon D.
