(The) Doonbeg, Ballybunion, Lahinch and Tralee (courses) were all similar in this regard. Many people rank Ballybunion in their top five in the world.” The group spent the last four nights further inland at the Plaza Hotel in Killarney. Throughout the trip, Riley enjoyed traditional Irish meals such as black and white pudding, fish and chips and lamb stew. “I sampled several Irish beers,” he said. “I stayed mostly with Harp, but also had Guinness. It’d be a sin not to try a Guinness in Ireland.” Without hesitation, Riley said the highlight of the trip was The Laurel’s Restaurant in Killarney. “That’s where Caoimhe (pronounced Keeva) and I made our ‘Danny Boy’ video. One of my goals before I left was to sing ‘Danny Boy’ (my dad’s favorite song) in a pub. I figured they’re not going to deny a Riley his dream in Ireland.” Riley met quite a few characters throughout his Ireland adventure, including Tom, his coach driver. “He was great at filling us in on local tidbits and Irish history. He also trained me to pick up an Irish independent newspaper from the hotel front desk every morning, thus saving him two euros.” Riley encountered some cold and wet weather throughout his week in Ireland. “Every day we had 20+ mph winds and temperatures in the mid-50s. Try swinging with three layers on. It’s like playing here in January early in the morning,” he said. Riley enjoys travel and has visited Australia multiple times. “It’s great to get out of your shell to see how others live and what other areas are like,” he said. One day, he said, he would like to visit Scotland “…since that’s where golf basically began.” As far as feeling at home in Arcadia, the long-time resident had this to say: “I love the sense of community. There are four families (including mine) on our street who have been in the same location for at least 40 years. That’s the definition of a strong neighborhood.” Look for Riley at this month’s local Fourth of July Parade. He’ll be the one wearing an American flag shirt and hat, navy blue shorts and red socks. Nap Closing your eyes for a little while is never a bad idea, especially if your itinerary is packed upon landing at your destination. Once you’ve made it through security and to your terminal, find an empty spot in the corner where there are no other passengers close by. Most people don’t particularly like the smell of nail polish, so it’s important (and polite) that you find a space all to yourself. Also, avoid painting your nails around any food vendors. It helps to pull your boarding pass out of your purse so you don’t have to dig around for it with your freshly painted digits.
