Preserving our past is something that benefits our community and we should be creative in our ways to preserve the historic properties in our community. Earlier this year, I led the efforts to save the Wright House. We worked with private investors to buy the property and save this unique historic property. These are just a few of the accomplishments this year. I look forward to continuing to do more of the same in the coming years; we still need to be challenging ourselves to do better. Body Mass Index is most accurate picture of health By Dr. Kristin Shealey Like a lot of us, you might dread stepping on the bathroom scale. After all, the number corresponds to a clothing size you consider ideal for yourself. But the number on the scale doesn’t tell the entire story. For starters, it doesn’t take into account how tall you are, an important variable in determining healthy body composition. To gain a more accurate picture of an individual’s weight, medical practitioners use the Body Mass Index, or BMI. This tool calculates an individual’s body fat based on their height and weight. According to the National Institutes of Health, a BMI below 18.5 is considered underweight, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is normal and a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is overweight. You’re obese if the number hits 30 and above. You can determine your own BMI using a BMI calculator easily found on the Internet. Knowing your BMI will give you and your doctor an idea of your health risks, including those for obesity- related conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. As you work toward maintaining a healthy lifestyle – one that includes regular exercise and a healthful diet – your BMI gives you a way to measure your progress. In addition to BMI, you’re encouraged to monitor your waist size, a risk indicator for cardiovascular disease. Ideally, a woman’s waist should measure less than 35 inches, and a man’s less than 40. Though BMI is not a perfect tool – it doesn’t differentiate between fat and muscle so a bodybuilder might incorrectly fall into the obese category – it offers a simple way for you and your doctor to monitor weight and any associated health risks. Finding out yours can help you stay on track with your health. Not really, just a party Photos by Craig Richardson More at arcadiadaily.com St. Theresa Catholic School and the Phoenix Fire Department coupled for a spectacular end-of-the-year water party for students. With a demolition project scheduled this summer to build a new Early Childhood Center, the Fire Department put on a show on some old buildings that will be torn down. The demonstration included smoke, water, body dummies and cutting holes in the building. And a good splashing for the students afterward.
