Children are her favorite subject, she said. Children are in a “curious state,” she said. “Their emotions are close to the surface and you can easily tell if they’re mad, sad, angry or glad.” Schantz specializes in black and white fi lm, “keeping things simple,” she said. “(The old-fashioned way) allows you to see subjects with simplicity and honesty,” she said. “You can see their inner beauty and not be distracted by colors.” She gives the negatives to her clients because they are one-of-a-kind and cast forever. Hull said even with two kids at home and a husband, Schantz is never frazzled. “She is someone to admire,” Hull said.
