Page 56 June 2013 ‘Nowhere But Home’ is Book Club selection for June By Amanda Goossen Like it or not, summer has arrived. And with the Arizona heat comes a couple great things. It’s time to lay by the pool, hop on a plane or lounge about just a bit with a book, or two, or if you’re like me, maybe 15. Summertime, one way or another, offers up a little extra time to read, even if it’s a quick hour after doing the dishes and before folding laundry, late at night. As a busy mom, I know it’s hard to fi nd the time, but I promise you it’s there. So open a book, dive in for an adventure and give yourself some time to relax. You deserve it, we all do. The Arcadia News Book Club is the gathering place for neighborhood book lovers and in June we will discuss Nowhere But Home by Liza Palmer. We’ll meet at 7 p.m. June 27 at Terra Java Coffee House, 3619 E. Indian School Road. Book Club attendees will enjoy 30-minutes with Palmer via SKYPE as well as coffee, tea and treats. For more information or to let us know you’ll be attending, please email amanda@arcadianews.com. BOOK CLUB SELECTION Nowhere But Home By Liza Palmer Queenie Wake has been running from her past for far too long. Ten years ago, she vowed to never return to North Star, Texas, but life has given her no choice. Driving into her small town, she feels like a failure. And the gossipy, mean girls of her past don’t make it any easier. The Wake family has been long regarded as the trash of North Star. Queenie and her sister, M e r r y Carole, have been cast in the shadow of their m o t h e r ’ s r e pu t a t io n their entire life. Going home means facing the demons that have haunted her. Not to mention facing the man who broke her heart. Can she do it? Queenie Wake is a spirited character, who’s not only fun to read but fascinating to watch as she learns about herself, her past and the painful fears that have plagued her very existence. Author Liza Palmer takes readers to a small Southern town and unravels a series of characters you simply can’t get enough of. Nowhere But Home is sweet and charming, heart wrenching and smart. The Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society By Darien Gee From the author of Friendship Bread comes a story of small town friendship and love with many of the same characters from the fi rst book, but with many new faces to discover and understand. Filled with all the things you’d expect from any small town, The Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society is a feel good story about the people who make up Avalon, Ill. and the things they’ll do for each other to survive the good, the bad and the ugly. Author Darien Dee does a beautiful job with a story not only about creating memories, but about preserving them along the way. CHILDREN’S BOOKS No Fits, Nilson By Zachariah O’Hora Award-winning author and illustrator Zachariah O’Hora brings young readers an adorable picture book about something kids and parents know well, tantrums. Little Amelia and her giant blue gorilla friend, Nilson, do everything together. But when Nilson throws the biggest, most “house shaking-est” fi t ever, they both get a time-out. Amelia must learn how to calm her dear friend whether through compromise, small surprises or teaching him tricks for better behavior. No Fits, Nilson is a precious story fi lled with vibrant illust rations. The colors and characters jump off the page, while the words touch your heart and remind young and old that patience and love is the key to life. Don’t Eat the Baby By Amy Young Tom’s little brother Nathaniel just arrived. He isn’t so sure about the baby who has stolen all the attention and to him, “can’t do one single interesting thing.” Tom is frustrated that everyone thinks he is adorable and wants to “take a bite out of his fat cheeks.” But when friends and family start mentioning that Nathaniel is so cute “they could swallow him whole,” or that he is so “yummy,” Tom grows concerned. He can’t let people eat his brother. A heart-warming story for the youngest kids in your life, Don’t Eat the Baby is funny and cute. Whether a new baby has just arrived in your home or not, all will thoroughly enjoy this terri fi c book. DUI CLASSES ONLINE! 3200 N Hayden Rd ~ Suite 170 - Just South of Osborn Rd 480.429.9044 WOW! Page 57 June 2013 Don’t let the heat keep you from enjoying the concerts By Craig Goossen The heat is on, but we can’t be held captive. It’s a long haul through the summer season, however as many leave the state for cooler environs, it’s we locals who hold it down. It’s up to us to keep the city pumped with life, so when traveling musicians come to town we can show them what we’re made of and that we appreciate them swinging through our city. Enjoy the new mix, stay cool and get out to the music. CEREMONY Hysteria (2012) The word punk gets thrown around a lot these days, but the reference is rarely applicable. Ceremony is the raw goods and the Rhythm Room will be the perfect setting. Ceremony will perform on June 4 at Rhythm Room, 1019 E. Indian School Road. The show is suitable for all ages; tickets are $14.
