Page 53 June 2013 Donati likes to collect Buddha statues, loves haikus and considers El Caminos to be her lucky charm. She described herself as loyal and a nerd. “I would describe her as classy because she’s always doing the right thing,” Grayman said. She’s passionate about volunteering and giving back to the community. “In giving, we receive. Getting involved is a huge way to learn and grow,” Donati said. In the fall, she began mentoring freshman students at Central High School for the program Destination Graduation. She goes two to three times a month and talks to students about real-life issues. “They are my favorite days of the week,” Donati said. “I love my class – they’re a great group of kids. They crack me up.” Donati has traveled to Honduras where she built a house and spent time in an orphanage. AAA also does some volunteer work, which is another reason to love it, Donati said. AAA is involved, among others, with St. Mary’s Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul and Habitat for Humanity. “She’s an asset to any community with all her volunteering,” Grayman said. “If she says she’ll do something, she’ll do it.” Three years ago her older sister, Melissa, died of a heart condition she didn’t know about. Donati went to grief counseling and afterward became a facilitator for a grief support group. “It was instrumental in my healing,” Donati said. Her sister had three children, so she spends a lot of time with her two nieces and nephew. Donati said she is more involved than most aunts as he tries to ful fi ll things her older sister would do with the kids, such as mother-son treasure hunts at school. Donati completed the PF Chang’s full-marathon in 2009 and 2010, and PF Chang’s half-marathon in 2011. She also participates in a number of runs throughout the year such as Pat’s Run, she said. After her sister died, Donati said she runs every race in her memory so she always writes “Team Melissa” somewhere on her body. Sundays she goes to Ahwatukee to spend time with her family where there’s always a minimum of 10 people, she said. “It’s a little crazy but a lot of fun.” Now as a new resident of Arcadia, she said she loves eating out and trying new restaurants because “Arcadia has so many great ones,” Her favorite thing about Arcadia is the community feel and how her neighbors watch out for each other. “It’s cool to live in a neighborhood that’s so thoughtful and generous. I never had that in other places I’ve lived,” Donati said. AAA Continued from page 41 Zombies also mean opportunity By Josh Thrall Zombies are in. Or, at least killing them. AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” a show about a small group of survivors trying to make it in a world infested with zombies, broke cable ratings records with the fi nale of its third season. Author Max Brooks’ zombie novel “World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War” spent four weeks on “The New York Times” Bestseller List. The Arizona Department of Zombie Defense takes up the cause of fi ghting zombies with its slogan: “If it’s dead, we’ll kill it.” D.O.Z.D Commander Shaun Hayes said his Valley-based group also uses zombies to educate people about survival techniques and self-defense for real life disaster situations. “If you do something in a fun way, people remember it” Hayes said. “The scariest thing isn’t the zombies; it’s what could really happen. Bad stuff happens all the time. Look at Hurricane Katrina. If you take water and food away from someone for a few days, people start hurting each other.” Hayes said he and the other founding members of D.O.Z.D. have backgrounds in the military and law enforcement, with Hayes having worked as medic for a Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) unit. He said they wanted to teach people survival skills and gun safety, and zombies allowed them to provide a fun outlet for that, as well as an opportunity for them to embrace their nerdy sides. “If everything went crazy, what would you do?” Hayes asked. “Most people have never been in a situation like that. Zombies were a good way to bring that up. They are an easy monster to hate.” Near Halloween D.O.Z.D. hosts zombie walks in Downtown Phoenix where thousands of people don zombie makeup and walk around as if they were the living dead. The annual event, which features live bands and activities, had 5,600 participants last year. Proceeds for D.O.Z.D events go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity for injured U.S. veterans. “It’s just a fun way to introduce people to our ideas,” Hayes said. “People just want to have fun and meet people. Dressing up as zombies is a good way to do that. We want to be as accessible as possible.” D.O.Z.D lets anyone establish a “squad” with as many members as they want and become members of the group. Every new member fi lls out a personal bio on the group’s website and submits pictures of themselves, with the chance of becoming a character in D.O.Z.D.’s of fi cial comic book series. “We took our love of the outdoors and tactics and decided to do something fun with it,” Hayes said.
