New local chapter formed of National Charity League By Margaret Ann Lippincott The newest local chapter of the National Charity League currently is accepting 2013-2014 membership applications. While Arcadia already has a chapter called NCL Camelback, the new one is called NCL Cactus Wren. National Charity League is a 501c3 mother/daughter organization providing community service, leadership development and cultural experiences for girls seventh-through-12 th grades. “It is kind of a combination of the Junior League, the Girl Scouts and a sorority,” said Arcadia resident Anne Price, president of the Cactus Wren chapter. National Charity League was founded in Pasadena, Calif. in 1925 and there currently are 51,000 members in 176 chapters in 21 states. The Arizona chapters began forming in the 1980s and there are about a dozen in Phoenix. “When there is consistently an over fl ow of applicants to a chapter, the national NCL considers opening a new chapter,” Price said. “We founded NCL Cactus Wren in August 2012 with 70 members.” Price got involved with her daughter Carolyn, a seventh-grader at Basis Scottsdale, because Basis did not have a community service element in its curriculum. “I wanted her to know the importance of public service,” Price said. “Plus it gives her a chance to develop leadership skills.” Freya Irani, a ninth grader at Phoenix Country Day School, said her most rewarding experience so far has been volunteering at the Sunday A’Fair at the Scottsdale Civic Center put on by Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. “I really enjoyed helping the little kids with art projects there,” Freya said. She said she got into the National Charity League mainly because other girls in her grade recommended it and her mom thought it would be a good experience to do community service and have fun. Cactus Wren’s membership spans Arcadia, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale and Tempe with 10 or 12 different countries also represented. Last year girls from 25 different schools participated. Daughters learn to plan events like the chapter tea, run their own meetings, learn about con fl ict resolution, develop an agenda, give presentations and work on poise and articulation. It costs $75 to join (both mothers and daughters) and $125 in yearly dues. The Cactus Wren chapter supports, among other organizations, the Welcome to America Project where mothers and daughters help organize and distribute food; Homeward Bound, where they work in the nursery holding babies, playing with the children and reading stories; Feed My Starving Children, where they pack meals; and the Scottsdale Cultural Council where they support children’s art and performing arts programs. Page 49 June 2013 Move from Philadelphia includes bringing Italian Ice By Amanda Goossen When Joe Natale moved to Phoenix from Philadelphia in 2011, he knew his life was about to change in more ways than one. “I had signed a contract to work a sales job for 13 months. The job would require me to work three days a week. I knew if I was ever going to start my own business, this was the time,” Natale said. Growing up in Philadelphia, Italian water ice was a major part of Natale’s life. Italian water ice is different than shaved ice. It’s a sweetened frozen dessert similar to sorbet. Italian water ice is made in a way similar to ice cream, fi rst freezing the ingredients and then mixing them. The consistency is smooth and slightly delicate. “My brother and I shared a paper route when we were kids,” Natale said. “Every day we ended by riding our bikes to get an ice.” While the move to Phoenix made it possible for Natale to open his own business, friends back home with their own mobile ice companies offered up advice from years of experience. “I shadowed two friends, watching what it took to run the business. They offered up recipes as well, but I eventually learned that tinkering with ingredients and creating my own recipes was what I preferred to do.” LuLu’s Italian Water Ice was born in October 2011. Starting with one cart and a handful of Italian Ice recipes, Natale began spending evenings and weekends at farmers markets, outdoor concerts and festivals. Handing out samples to everyone who walked by, Natale hoped word would get out his ice was like nothing else in Phoenix. Twenty months later, LuLu’s Italian Water Ice has spread like wild fi re. Now with six carts and a group of part-time employees, Natale no longer works his sales job.
