Page 4 June 2013 There’s lots of recognition to go around this month By Dale Messmer I was all prepared to do a little bragging this month about our little newspaper’s accomplishments until I heard about Tavan Elementary School and Alex Reynolds. Oh, I still want to point out that we bagged a boatload of awards in the annual Best of the Best contest of the Association of Free Community Papers. I mean, Best of Show is a dog that hunts, and we also took six fi rsts, four seconds and three thirds in various categories. Then there were the awards from the state Press Club, where publisher Greg Bruns and do-everything reporter Amanda Goossen walked off with trophies. Nice work, guys. I’d be remiss, though, if I just bragged about us. Especially in light of what’s going on at Tavan and in the Reynolds household. Tavan is now an A+ School of Excellence, celebrating the new designation with a school-wide ceremony in mid-May. It’s a big deal for the school, which has worked very hard to bring its standards up to such a lofty plateau. A+ schools go through a rigorous application with the Arizona Education Foundation that includes faculty, students, administration and the community. Then a strict on- site examination before the three-year designation is granted. What makes it especially sweet for Tavan is the fact that it is the largest school to be so designated, according to the folks at the Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District. And the fact this is their fi rst such award. So congratulations are indeed in order for Tavan. Nice work. So, too, for Alex Reynolds, an Arcadia High senior who was selected Athlete of the Year by the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission. A three-year varsity starter in both football and basketball, Reynolds did not win the award just for his on- fi eld accomplishments. He ranks sixth academically in his class, and the list of his volunteer and school-club activities is equally impressive. You can read all about them starting on page 62. While there, take a look at a few other neighborhood kids’ accomplishments, including a 9-year-old’s hole-in-one on the golf course and 11 students who made All- City sports teams.
