For the past three years, Portillo has written for AHS’ student-run newspaper The Arcadian , where she was the business manager. Portillo also served as editor-in- chief of Titan Today , the school’s annual literary magazine. Portillo said being on the student newspaper felt like she was where she belonged in high school and it became part of who she is. Bryce McKinney-Wain, journalism and English teacher, said Portillo has worked hard as a journalist. “(Portillo) is inquisitive, probing and incredibly optimistic,” McKinney-Wain said. “Her innate sense in asking any interview question is derived from a sense of how she would feel on the other side of the table.” Portillo and her family are originally from El Salvador, where her parents worked as news anchors. They moved to the United States when she was 6. Portillo said she is exposed to a lot of reporting and news, which has helped her be a better reporter. “My home is all news all the time,” Portillo said. “Some families are movie crazy, but my family is news crazy.” Portillo said she became interested in writing to help express herself when she moved to the U.S. “That’s another reason why I wanted to write because I wanted to express myself,” she said. “That was really dif fi cult for me, especially because I didn’t know English.” Portillo said she wants to be a journalist because of the perspective she said journalists lend to readers through reporting. “I think (journalism) is just as important as math and being a doctor,” Portillo said. “Those are the professions we need, but writing and art are what we live for. I think they provide people with perspective to relate with others and I think that’s crucial in making connections with others.” Arcadia News fi rst awarded a scholarship in 2005 to an AHS student who went on to attend George Washington University. Since then, 14 students have received the scholarship and have attended ASU, University of Arizona, Pomona College and Tufts University, among others. Arcadia News publisher Greg Bruns said the scholarship can help students going into journalism face college with more con fi dence. “When you are in high school and you are facing the idea of college, I know it can be daunting, not just from a fi nancial standpoint but from a mental one too,” Bruns said. “If we give a little something back to the community, especially to kids who are interested in the fi eld [of journalism], it’s just the right thing to do.” Fine art lovers. Fitness lovers. Canine lovers. Dan and Janet Finch knew they weren’t moving anywhere without their boys: 6-year-old Max and 4-year-old Murphy. Knowing their golden retrievers were welcome here sealed the deal. Every morning, the four walk a mile; Dan then visits the pool while Janet enjoys the fitness center. Each evening, the couple sits down for supper in our dining room, where their collection of James Nathan Muir bronze sculptures is now on public display. The Finches are Terraces kinds of people. Susan Tibbets Associate Broker, REALTOR® SFR Certi fi ed Of fi ce: 602.463.7000 E-mail: susantibbets@gmail.com Web: www.ArcadiaHomes.com Here’s what a client of Susan’s has to say... “I am a Scottsdale native and have known Susan Tibbets and her impeccable reputation long before working with her. I hired her with pride, complete con fi dence and comfort that my home was in good hands as I moved my family all away across the country. And sure enough, she sold our home faster and for a better price than I had imagined possible in a tough real estate market. Susan works so incredibly hard, is organized, and always kept me informed of all my transactional details. Furthermore, I was part of a corporate relocation (which involves endless tedious paperwork and additional negotiations with a third party) which Susan handled with grace, tact, ease & patience. All of us here have been lucky to work with a person of this quality. I feel lucky to call her my agent, and blessed to call her my friend.” – “Signed with the highest regards,” - Elizabeth Marr Near 62nd St. and Lafayette 3 Bd Rm, 2 Ba, 2,000 Sq.
