The National Kidney Foundation reports scientists found evidence of them in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Phoenix, like Egypt, is an arid environment where it’s easy to get dehydrated. That can sometimes lead to kidney stones in vulnerable individuals. Quite painful, they send more than 500,000 people to emergency rooms annually. Kidney stones can be as small as a grain of sand or as big as a golf ball. The stones are created when certain substances – calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine and phosphate – become concentrated in the urine and form hard crystals. The stone may stay in the kidney or move down the urinary tract into the ureter. If a stone is tiny, it can be excreted in the urine without causing a lot of pain. But stones that don’t move can cause urine to back up in the kidney, ureter, bladder or urethra. And that causes pain. Continued on page 19 D.
