Page 52 May 2013 Clinics to offer wheelchair-bound kids chance to play By Miranda Rivers A series of free adaptive sports clinics will be held at the Virginia G. Piper Sports & Fitness Center this spring and summer giving children with disabilities an opportunity to get involved in sports. Organizers said the clinics will introduce children to the specialty wheelchairs and equipment used in competition and also teach them the basic fundamentals of wheelchair basketball and power soccer. The adaptive sports clinics are set for May 4, June 8 and July 13 in a partnership between the MaxInMotion Foundation and the Arizona Bridge to Independent Living. The Disability Empowerment Center is at 5031 E Washington St. Players from the Phoenix Wheelchair Suns and the Arizona State University Power Soccer team will be on hand to help coach the children. Tony Jackson, reception and registration specialist of the sports and fi tness center, has been playing power soccer for four years and will help out at this year’s clinics. He teaches a Friday power soccer class at the fi tness center and currently is on ASU’s Sun Devil Power Soccer team. “We are hoping, and expecting, for a good turnout,” Jackson said. “A lot of kids with disabilities don’t even know they can play a sport. We want to do some demos with them, teach them basic skills, and maybe get them to play a game.” Jackson said he wished he had such an opportunity to learn about sports when he was a kid. Loren Worthington, the center’s communications and marketing manager, said the most dif fi cult aspect of putting on such events is “recruiting and getting people aware. … It is frustrating when we run into someone and they say they don’t know about it.” Worthington said his goals are to introduce the sports to kids who don’t have a sport already and to give families sports options for all their children. The Virginia Piper Sports Center is a state-of-the-art facility and one of only two fi tness centers in the U.S. designed to host sports, fi tness, and recreational activities for people with disabilities. The facility has two indoor basketball courts, an indoor track, rock-climbing wall, a swimming pool and a fi tness center with a group fi tness room. The facility is adaptively designed but accessible for everyone. “Families come because one family member has a disability, but the whole family is invited and can come use the facility,” Worthington said. Page 53 May 2013 Development of facility target of swimming group By Michelle Milan A group of community members and supporters have formed the nonpro fi t organization Preserving Community Aquatics Inc. to save the Phoenix Swim Club’s pool from being sold to a developer. The pool is owned by Brophy College Preparatory, which plans to sell it to Ryland Homes where plans are to turn it into 35, two-story family homes. It was built in 1988 and purchased by Brophy in 2002 for $1.7 million on a special-use permit allowing the Phoenix Swim Club to operate it, said Tricia Schafer, Preserving Community Aquatics board member. The value of the land is now $6.8 million. Brophy is attempting to remove the special-use permit and revert the property to residential zoning, Schafer said. “Our mission is not to prevent Brophy from selling the property,” Schafer said. “But Brophy has an obligation with the special-use permit to sell it to a buyer who will preserve that purpose.” Preserving Community Aquatics meets weekly and has 2,500 supporters. It has more than 1,900 petitions on Change.org and between 300 to 400 signatures in print. “We’re allowing the community and swimmers to join together to have a voice,” said aquatics board member Lindsay Herf. “I grew up swimming there. A lot of kids grew up swimming there.” Herf said. “A lot (of people) of the community don’t want this to happen because it’s a part of life.” Planned meetings with the Camelback East Village Planning Committee, the Planning Commission and city council are set for September, Schafer said. “We will need to continue to build consensus politically, administratively and fi nancially for Brophy to consider disposing the property,” Schafer said. The Arizona Marlins Swim Club is now accepting applications for their Summer Team. The instructional swim program is for children ages 5-14 years old. The six week program runs June 3-July 11 at Phoenix Country Day Aquacenter, 40th Street just north of Camelback. Practice times are 3-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The program cost is $125 per swimmer. For more information, call 480-945-2730.
