Page 4 May 2013 Moms, dads and bees: lots of good stuff you can read By Dale Messmer I know it’s Mother’s Day this month, but it was a group of fathers that caught my attention as we put this edition together. The Ingleside Dads Club is an instrumental part of the middle school’s success. Our story about the club starts on page 17. Like a lot of us, I think of my school years as different, often harder, than those of today’s students. I didn’t like walking uphill both ways in the blazing sun. We had pick-up games on the playground, not highly organized activities and uniforms. But one generational improvement, without doubt, is the increased involvement of fathers in their children’s education. It’s no longer just sporting events Dad attends, nor just in what he shows an interest. Nowhere is that more evident than at Ingleside, where the Dads Club has put together a strong fundraising arm to help them contribute to the educational opportunities and, yes, fun of going to school. Hope you’ll read the story. We didn’t ignore Mom, of course. There’s a nice fi rst-person look by a reporter about her mother on page 25. It’s worth your time too. There’s even a scary story this month, one right out of a Hitchcock movie. It’s bee season. I’m petri fi ed of bees, no matter how many times people told me as a child that they’re more afraid of me than I am of them. Always thought that was silly. Bug brains are too small to process fear. At least I think that’s true. Stems from a childhood incident. Backed into a corner of a swimming pool, where a bee was having a leisurely drink of water. The little bugger stung me. There was plenty of water for both of us, I think, but there you have it. Bee sting as a small child, lifelong fear of bees. I can only hope they really are afraid of me, too. Anyway, the story is full of dire warnings and good advice. Page 29. Some great stories in Sports this month, too. Father-son running duo at Arcadia High School. Xavier star’s decision to continue her career in Virginia. Opportunities for the wheelchair-bound to participate in sports. All starts on page 50. No matter what you decide to read, thanks for spending some time this month with the Arcadia News .
