Page 29 May 2013 Bee season: swarm, hive dangerous By Danielle Grobmeier Residents are warned to be cautious when handling bee problems or approaching a potentially dangerous swarm. Several incidents of bee swarming were alerted on Arizona State University campuses in April, and other incidents, including one in which a Glendale man attempted to eradicate a large bee swarm on his own, have resulted in injuries. Rick Heicksen, a regional manager for AAA Africanized Bee Removal Special- ists, said Arizona’s bee season started earlier than usual this year – around mid-March. AAA Africanized Bee Removal Specialists is located on 48 th Street and Thomas Road and serves the Phoenix metro area, including Arcadia. Heicksen, who has been beekeeping in Arizona for 20 years, said bees are present year-round in the state, but swarms tend to become more obvious during Arizona’s dry, hot summer months. “Unfortunately, we have wonderful weather, and we’re only cold in winter season for two months out of the year,” Heicksen said. He said bees will feed off of honey stores they’ve created during the spring and summer months, with bee colonies spreading when bees split off from their parent colonies between six and eight times each year. Heicksen said bees often will return to places in which they have previously created honeycomb, and said Arizona usually has about six to eight colonies per square mile. “They’re out in full force,” he said. Heicksen said it’s important residents remember handling a bee situation alone is ill advised. “(People) see a few bees coming in and out of an opening…but even a brand new colony is between 6,000 and 8,000 bees,” Heicksen said. “Never ever try to handle the bee situation yourself.” In the case of a possible bee attack, residents should call the fi re department. Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Larry Nunez said the department has responded to more than 20 bee calls this year – whether in regards to a possible bee problem or involving a more aggressive bee attack. “We’ll only respond to bee swarms if there’s an actual immediate threat to the general public,” Nunez said. In the case of a dangerous situation, he said the fi re department will fi rst help anyone being stung and then use foam on the bee hive to contain the issue until a local beekeeper arrives to eradicate the problem. “One of the main things we teach people is…don’t go swatting at the bees,” Nunez said.
