Corral proceedings interesting By Steven Sarkis On a recent trip through the Wild West, I learned a great deal about one of Arizona’s most legendary stories, the Gun fi ght at the O.K. Corral. Lesser known than the gun fi ght, but just as interesting, is the legal proceeding that followed the shoot-out. More than a century later, the gun fi ght is the stuff of legends. Although known of fi cially as the Gun fi ght at the O.K. Corral, most people would be disheartened to learn that the O.K. Corral was actually about a half block away from where the infamous shoot-out took place. However, history and Hollywood quickly determined there wouldn’t be quite as much public interest in a story called the Gun fi ght Across the Street from Addie Borland’s Dressmaking Shop. Needless to say, the Gun fi ght at the O.K. Corral found its place in history. Following the shoot-out, a preliminary hearing was held before Justice of the Peace Wells Spicer. The purpose of the hearing before Judge Spicer, later nicknamed the Spicer Hearing, was to determine if enough evidence existed to warrant holding Doc Holliday and Virgil, James, Wyatt and Morgan Earp in custody until a trial took place. One of the interesting aspects of this hearing is that Spicer is said to have been a distant relative of the Earp brothers. Apparently the judicial system was quite different from today as no con fl ict of interest was raised by any of the parties.
