With Courtesy Chevrolet, MJ Insurance, Arcadia News and San Tan Ford coming forward as sponsors immediately, things were off to a great start. Only two days into registration, more than 60 participants had registered. “With 400 runners, we can meet our goal of $50,000,” Mark said. “I know we can do it.” The day will end with an after party at OHSO brewery. Registration for the race is $40 for adults, $30 for children ages 4-12 years and children younger than 4 are free. Registration at TeamTaylorAZ.com includes a T-shirt and race participation. 5K Run Continued from page 39 Dresses Continued from page 50 put on its own dress drive. More than 30 mothers and daughters are participating, Davis said. In January, chapter members hosted a dress drive at the Studio Movie Grill, which featured a movie screening of My Fair Lady, Davis said. The entrance fee was one dress, and hundreds of dresses were collected, Davis said. In March, members supported ASU Gammage and its Beauty and the Beast Broadway musical event to collect more dresses. “Within our chapter, we will continue supporting Hope & A Future’s programs and are seeking retail and other partners to amplify our dress collection efforts in coming months,” Price said. Price said the group has nearly 1,000 dresses and gowns. “Thanks to the generosity of the community,” Price said. The NCL Cactus Wren Chapter created drop-off boxes for donations at the Village Health Clubs in Camelback, Gainey and DC Ranch, as well as local high schools and businesses, Davis said. “I think that the girls and moms can see the bene fi t and need for these teen foster girls to be pampered and feel special, because they don’t always get that in their lives,” Price said. Page 55 April 2013 Book club plans double 1-year birthday celebration By Amanda Goossen Happy Birthday to us! The Arcadia News Book Club is of fi cially a year old. To celebrate we are planning two exciting events. First, best-selling author Andrew Gross will be signing books at The Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Old Town Scottsdale, 4014 N. Goldwater Blvd., 7 p.m. on April 8. The book club will meet next door at 6:30 p.m. at Butter and Me Bakeshop to enjoy a few treats before heading over to the event together. Gross spent time SKYPING with our book club last year and you never know, he might just make an appearance at our pre-event April 8. Then, at 6:45 p.m. on April 18, the Book Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at Terra Java Coffee house, 3619 E Indian School Road. Join us for coffee, tea and treats as we discuss our book of the month, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. Each month we SKYPE with the author of the book and enjoy riveting discussions. For more information on the Arcadia News Book Club, or to let us know you’re coming, email Amanda@arcadianews.com. Orphan Train By Christina Baker Kline Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is an extraordinary story of forgotten history. Molly Ayer is about to age out of the foster care system. Lost and broken after a life of abandonment, Molly has nowhere to turn. When Vivian, a wealthy old woman with a secret past suddenly comes into her life, Molly discovers she’s not quite as alone as she once thought. Vivian was a young Irish immigrant who became orphaned soon after arriving to New York City. Her life, as well as the lives of hundreds of others kids, was then put to chance on the orphan train. Although Orphan Train is a fi ctional account of real events that occurred in America between 1854 and 1929, it’s obvious research was incredibly important to author Christina Baker Kline. The story is both heart wrenching and inspiring. The characters will stay with you long after the novel is complete. No Way Back By Andrew Gross Andrew Gross is an absolute master at fast-paced suspense and his latest novel, No Way Back, is no different. Angry with her husband after a simple disagreement, Wendy Gould makes a decision that will not only destroy her marriage, but suddenly put her life at risk. Lauritzia Velez is a young nanny hiding from a Mexican crime lord who’s been tormenting her family for years. When she fi nds herself in the middle of a shootout at the local mall, Lauritzia realizes her whereabouts have been discovered. As both women run from bullets and terrifying madmen, it becomes obvious their experiences may be connected. Finding each other and the answers to their problems may be the only thing that can keep them alive. Gross once again turns current events into a heart-racing, gut- wrenching novel impossible to put down. Marvin Makes Music By Marvin Hamlisch Illustrated by Jim Madsen As a composer, Marvin Hamlisch was one of the best this world has ever seen. Now in his beautiful children’s book, Marvin Makes Music, young readers can enjoy the story of how he began his career in music. As a little boy, Marvin loved music. He heard music in everything he did. His piano bench was his favorite place to be until it was time to practice. He detested the old songs his teacher made him play and performing for his father’s friends. Marvin wanted to create his own music and daydream of becoming a conductor for a very important orchestra. Precious illustrations and a sweet story, bring the tale of the remarkable Marvin Hamlisch to children too young to know or remember such a talented man. Thisbe’s Promise By Laurian Scott Author Laurian Scott has been through the unimaginable, losing two young children (Thisbe and Noah) to a pediatric motor neuron disease, speci fi cally a rare type called Brown-Vialetto- Van Laere. Since the diagnosis of their children, Laurian and John have developed the Thisbe and Noah Scott Foundation to raise money and awareness for the disease and the research necessary to further efforts towards a cure. In 2008, Laurian wrote Thisby’s Promise, a stunningly beautiful tale of a little girl and a mother’s love. A portion of the proceeds from the book go to aid the mission of the Thisbe and Noah Scott Foundation. DUI CLASSES ONLINE! 3200 N Hayden Rd ~ Suite 170 - Just South of Osborn Rd 480.429.9044 WOW!
