In the Goossen household no one could keep their hands out of the toffee jar. “Seriously the best toffee I’ve ever had. And I fancy myself a serious enthusiast,” said my husband Craig between bites of milk chocolate almond and chocolate mint. I guess I know what to give him for our anniversary. Sweets Continued from page 43 Cullen Campbell By Michelle Milan Cullen Campbell, local chef and owner of Italian restaurant Crudo, has been invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York City on April 22. The James Beard Foundation is a national nonpro fi t organization “dedicated to exploring the way food enriches our lives,” according the foundation’s website. “Only the best in the country get picked,” Campbell said. “You have to present your menu to them, and they have to accept you.” Once the menu is submitted, it’s in “the works” for more than a year, Campbell said. The James Beard Foundation goes through them and the chef is required to send all local press accounts to prove they’re a leader in their community – as far as food goes – he said. “I’m really excited, I’ve always wanted to do this,” Campbell said. “It was one of the happiest days of my life when I found out.” Campbell said probably only three people from Arizona have cooked there in a year. First-responder assistance aided by slider-eating test By Michelle Milan The Chicago Hamburger Co. will host its fourth annual Slider Eating Contest to bene fi t the nonpro fi t 100 Club of Arizona. It will be 3:30 p.m. April 7 at 38th Street and Indian School Road. The entrance fee for contestants is $35. The restaurant also will be open 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and all proceeds from the day’s sales will go to the 100 Club of Arizona. The 100 Club of Arizona provides fi nancial support to families of public safety of fi cers and fi re fi ghters killed or seriously injured. It also provides assistance that helps enhance their safety and welfare. “We chose to help this charity because we get a lot of police of fi cers and fi re fi ghters in the restaurant,” said Bob Pappanduros, owner of Chicago Hamburger Co. “This is a great charity and it helps them and their families.” People can pay to sponsor a police of fi cer or fi re fi ghter so they don’t have to pay an entrance fee, said Becca Eldridge, community events coordinator of the 100 Club of Arizona. Pappanduros said he never knows how much money the restaurant will raise; the highest was $1,600 and the lowest $800. Nicole Neter, event and volunteer manager of the 100 Club of Arizona, said the group hasn’t set a goal, members just want as many people to get involved as possible. “When we partner with people, we’re thankful for whatever we raise. Even that they thought of helping us is more important.” Eldridge said. “That’s our motto in any of our partnerships.” In the past, the contest has had as many as 16 contestants and as few at 10. The maximum allowed is 20, Pappanduros said. About 80 to 100 people come to watch and be a part of the fundraiser and contest, he said. The eating competition will be held outside in the parking lot. The Maule Family Band will provide entertainment. “It should be fun even if you don’t want to enter the contest,” Eldridge said.
