Page 28 April 2013 Tavan students assemble job types in wax museum By Christopher Peña The students at Tavan Elementary School are putting together their own kind of wax museum and opening it to the public April 25 to act out the many professions they have been learning about this semester. Throughout the grades, students have been researching professions from fi nding out how much money people make to what education they needed to get their job. Speech pathologist Ana McCrory, speech instructor Maria Hase and speech language assistant Amanda Pabst are putting the event together. Between 20 and 40 students are expected to participate. “The students range from as young as kindergarten through fi fth grade,” McCrory said. “They will all be doing something different.” The students in kindergarten, fi rst and second grade are recording themselves on video, saying what they want to be when they grow up. The students in third, fourth and fi fth grade will speak in front of a crowd, explaining their chosen profession. Students have been writing letters to people in different fi elds ranging from a range technician, men and women in the military and an animal shelter director to a language pathologist. Letters from the students have been sent to people throughout the world. “We have a naval of fi cer based in Greece, and an English teacher in Spain,” McCrory said. The idea of a wax museum came from a job fair held at the school last year and one at another elementary school. “We had seen a wax museum at Kiva Elementary School in honor of Arizona’s 100th anniversary,” Hase said. The teachers said they want students to know about the hardships of a job, as well as the importance of obtaining an education to land their dream jobs. “We wanted them to practice as if they would be that profession,” McCrory said. In the letters, the children asked detailed questions to get an inside look at everyday work life. “The children asked questions such as ‘What is your salary?’ and ‘What are your hours?’ things like that,” McCrory said. McCrory and Hase said they want the children to know how important a college education is, and stressed this to the men and women receiving the students’ letters. “When we sent cover letters, we asked them if they could emphasize what aspects of education were important,” Hase said. The workers also explained which subjects were important in terms of their profession. The wax museum will be 1:45 to 3 p.m. The school is at 4610 E. Osborn Road.
