To compete in this global economy, we have to be able to deliver services when you need them and the city must always be looking forward and using the latest technology to be as responsive to you as possible. Last year, I asked the city manager to begin the 24/7 initiative – making services accessible to the public on a 24/7 timeline. A task force will be working with city departments and the community to improve business services and non-911 emergency services response. Highlighting this initiative will be the 311 service. Imagine making one phone call that can connect you to all city services instead of searching for the department number – 311 is a call center where a resident can reach the water department, the planning and development department and parks and recreation and more all at once. Look for this in the coming months. Stay tuned for more ideas as the task force moves forward. Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio represents District 6, which includes Arcadia. DiCiccio Continued from page 15 Concussions Continued from page 14 signs and symptoms of concussion can last for days, weeks or longer. A repeat concussion that occurs before the brain recovers from the fi rst – usually within hours, days, or weeks – can slow recovery or increase the likelihood of long-term problems. In rare cases, repeat concussions can result in brain swelling, permanent brain damage and even death. Can you let a child go to sleep if you suspect a concussion? Contrary to what many of us grew up believing, yes, you can. Schools often do a baseline (pre-injury) test before a sport starts. Results from that test can be used and compared to a similar exam when a child has a suspected concussion. Preventing the injury in the fi rst place is always best, so children always should wear protective gear, including helmets for football, baseball, bicycling, skating, skateboarding, skiing, sledding, etc. And, always buckle up.
