Page 14 April 2013 Dr. Jackie Doris Concussions serious for children By Jackie I. Doris, M.D. The old adage, “Shake it off!” does not apply when it comes to head knocks – whether it’s on a Little League diamond or an NFL fi eld. With children, the possibility of concussion – a brain injury – is a serious matter because the brain is still growing. That makes it quite vulnerable to knocks and bumps to the head, as well as jolts that cause the brain to hit against the inside of the skull. Injury can lead to signi fi cant lifelong impairment affecting memory, behavior, learning and/or emotions. A concussion can happen almost anywhere, including a playground, a sidewalk or a playing fi eld. If a coach believes there’s a possibility of concussion, he or she should pull the child from the practice or game immediately. Concussion symptoms can include: • Grogginess, confusion, behavior changes. • Loss of memory. • Blurred vision. • Fatigue. • Sensitivity to light and noise. • Headache. • Persistent vomiting. • Seizure. • Loss of consciousness, although most concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Make sure the child is seen by a health care professional experienced in evaluating concussions. Children should not go back into a practice or a game on the day of the injury or until a health care professional says they are symptom-free and clears them for play. Most children with a concussion will recover quickly and fully. Page 15 April 2013 Progress reported on two fronts Councilman Sal DiCiccio By Sal DiCiccio Exciting progress has been made in the key areas of domestic violence and transitioning Phoenix to a 24-hour city. Here are the updates: Domestic violence plan As I recently reported, under the leadership of Councilman Michael Nowakowski, Councilwoman Thelda Williams and myself, the city of Phoenix is preparing to take a leadership role in stopping the devastating effects of domestic violence in our community. Our goal is simple: Make Phoenix the national leader in ending domestic violence and serving its victims. Recently, the council took the fi rst step by allocating funds to the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence to create a centralized screening process for the region’s residential shelter programs. It also created a housing specialist position to assist victims and survivors in fi nding more permanent housing. But this is just the beginning. In March, the city of Phoenix released a report on what lies ahead for this tremendous undertaking. The work of my colleagues, the O’Connor House and 20-plus domestic violence shelters and community leaders has paid off. Two of the highlights are an outreach plan targeting the private sector and the community as a whole and asking them to join the city’s effort to end domestic violence and a strategic plan with fi ve pillars: community campaign; Phoenix as a model; systems reforms to focus on domestic violence; coordinated services; and partnerships. We are excited to see this moving forward, but there are hurdles ahead – council subcommittees and further council action, etc. I am con fi dent with the leadership of my colleagues and the domestic-violence coalition, Phoenix Continued on page 16 We specialize in new, lightly used Antiques & Home Furnishings, Décor items & Jewelry.
