Our Calendar of Events allows you to find ways to keep your family busy this summer. 4 Beyond Chicken Fingers: Local Chefs Offer Kids Menus Even the Parents Can Love Restaurants throughout Arcadia are turning away from traditional Kids Menu items and creating meals that not only excite the kids but also fill them up with healthy, natural ingredients. 8 Summer Camp For Every Kid: Three Camps Making a Differece Camp Candlelight, Camp Rainbow and the Arizona Magic of School and Dance work hard to offer every kid a chance at Summer Camp. Learn about the people and organizations making a difference in the lives of so many. 6 Avoiding the Summer Slide Do your kids forget their math facts or vocabulary words as soon as summer sinks in? We get to the bottom of the dreaded brain drain plaguing kids once school is back in session. Camp Guide Directory Your ultimate guide to camps and their programs for family and kids! 10 12 Editor’s Note Time to start summer plans! Two and a half months from now, the school year will wind down and kids will inherently sense the excitement of summer. The swimming pools will sparkle, the heat will reach just over 100 degrees and we, the parents, will know that only a few days from now our kids will be bored. But that doesn’t need to happen. With summer camps spread out in every area of Phoenix, designed with every personality and temperament in mind, there is absolutely no reason for your kiddos to be spiritless, disinterested or bored. My kids love to spend their summer exploring museums, special events and library activities. There’s nothing like committing your child to the Public Library Reading Program where they can earn incentives for crossing books off their reading list. Museums are another favorite in our home and with many offering free admission days; it’s a great gift all around. My hope is that with the inaugural Arcadia News Camps Guide, parents throughout Arcadia will be able to keep the guide handy, turning to it continually through the summer of 2013. With our Calendar of Events you can fill the days that land on a week off of camp, with our Summer Slide information you can prepare your child and avoid the learning gap that happens far more often than any of us expect. And with our feature on some of our favorite Kids Meals in local restaurants, you can feed the kiddos without turning on the oven or feeling even a slight bit of guilt. I hope you enjoy this month’s Special Section. Email me at amanda@arcadianews.com with any thoughts or questions. See you soon! Amanda Goossen MARCH 2013 3 Content 4 8 10 6 12
