Page 4 March 2013 Congress wouldn’t be able to put this puzzle together By Dale Messmer Unless you’re a member of Congress, you’re familiar with staying within a budget. In the newsroom, we use the word budget for the list of stories and photographs scheduled to run in the next issue of the paper. Snarky comments about Congress aside, we want to run a surplus, because a de fi cit means white space around the ads, which is a horrid use of expensive paper. This month, we had about 30 stories slated for use, many of them with photos. If you take the time to count, you’ll see we have nowhere near that many in the paper. So we have a start on the budget for April. We also have the terrible task of deciding what’s in and what’s out. Without de fi cit spending. There’s only so much space and so many stories, and editors have to make them match. So the Ingleside kids doing a bang up job serving the community (page 25) make the cut. A similar story about Hopi kids waits until next month. Nothing against Hopi, but the idea was sent to us later than the Ingleside one, plus we want to have as much variety in story content as possible each month. There’s also the matter of time to factor in. Some stories, like Arizona Gives Day (page 17) and Rock the Zoo (page 29), have a short shelf life. They either run in March or not at all, since both events are this month. Picking stories is the best of times and the worst of times for an editor. Worst because something that readers would certainly like or want in their newspaper has to wait. Good because it’s somewhat like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, and puzzles are fun. In one respect, it’s easier than a jigsaw puzzle, in fact. You can shave the pieces. Practically no story makes it into the paper without a little trimming of words. But even that has a downside. For instance, this month’s Travel Tips (page 45) has great advice for Spring Break. Part of it was about responsible use of alcohol. That was trimmed so the story would fi t. Suf fi ce to say it’s a good idea to let your adult children know that too much booze can ruin party time and be very dangerous away from home. Please enjoy what made it into the Arcadia News this month. And as always, thanks for reading.
