It’s exciting, especially if ESPN. com has ranked you as the No. 1 recruit in the nation at your position, but it isn’t always easy. Just ask Arcadia long snapper Brendan Turelli. “The recruitment process is very dif fi cult, having to make up your mind, one day wanting to go somewhere, another day wanting to go to a different place, or having a school lose interest in you and then having a new school come at you,” he said. “It’s kind of like a roller coaster.” The process was also a lot of fun, of course. Turelli went on unof fi cial visits to Texas Christian, Alabama, Nebraska, Boise State and ASU before taking an of fi cial trip to the University of Wyoming. During those visits he toured campuses, sat in on team meetings and got to meet some of the titans of college football, Nick Saban (Alabama) and Bo Pelini (Nebraska), as he got a taste of what life would be like as a player on the different campuses. Still, it took a lot of time and energy from him and his parents, who acted as liaisons between their son and the many interested teams and accompanied him on trips. “It was kind of a mixed bag of excitement and nerves,” his father, Tim Turelli said. “It’s always nice when your son or your child gets that recognition,” but as a former high school football coach, Tim knew that opportunities for his son would be limited. Though most coaches will tell you how crucial it is to have someone who can get the ball back to their punters and kickers with nearly perfect consistency, they rarely feel that it’s necessary to have more than one on the team. So whereas colleges are always trying to add depth at running back, wide receiver, and other skill positions regardless of who their current starters are, most schools don’t bother pursuing long snappers if they already have a starter on the team. Three SUSD students were awarded scholarships. Coronado High volleyball player Ana Gonzalez also received a $500 scholarship from the Charros. Nominations for these awards are made by SUSD athletic directors and coaches Lauren Weikle, a golfer at Desert Mountain High, received the Scottsdale Healthcare All-City Health and Wellness scholarship. This $500 scholarship is given to a student who intends to pursue healthcare related studies in an accredited in-state school. SUSD will host two more All-City Athletic Awards Banquets of the 2012-13 school year to honor winter and spring sports. The complete list of All-City teams is to the right. New coach, players set for baseball By Jaime Eisner Arcadia High’s baseball team is coming off of a 21-8 season in which they advanced to the second game of the Division II state championship tournament. However, this season’s group of Titans is dramatically different than the team that took the fi eld last season. Nine seniors graduated from last year’s team. Those players accounted for the top four batting averages, three of the top four total runs, eight of the top nine total RBI, the two top base stealers and 60 percent of the pitching staff. There is also a new coach in town, Troy Gerlach. He said he is unworried about the high number of seniors that graduated from last season’s team, and that while it will be tough to fi ll the shoes of the talented players who are gone, he is con fi dent that the players he and his staff have in place will play well. He added that he is not expecting players to try to replace anyone else. He just wants them to be and play as themselves. One player Gerlach is expecting big things from is senior Max Schuman. As a junior, Schuman led all players in at-bats, doubles and home runs last season. He was also third on the team in runs and second on the team in both hits and RBI. “He is a big, strong kid,” Gerlach said. “He works hard and has a great attitude.” Schuman has signed with the University of Utah and was named to the preseason USA Today All-Arizona team.
