By Natalie Miranda Parents and students of Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District were introduced to Arizona’s fi rst all-digital science book that K-12 students will use in the fall at February’s Arizona SciTech Festival at Arcadia High School. Brad Fountain, director of instructional implementation for Discovery Education, demonstrated the new online text. Hands-on resources accompany all of the digital resources, Fountain said. The text already is available for grades six through 12 and will become available for kindergarten to fi fth grades in June, said Barbara Reinert, curriculum specialist for Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District. The district has an eight-year license with Discovery Education, Reinert said. In its second year, the Arizona SciTech Festival featured science projects done by students at Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center, Tavan and Hopi elementary schools, Ingleside Middle School and Arcadia High School. The event was a collaboration between schools, businesses and organizations to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), said Robin McNulty, program consultant for Arizona SciTech Festival. The eight-week festival is held at various locations throughout the state. “Ultimately we want students to think about STEM careers,” she said. Summer Rowen, a fi fth grader at Tavan, displayed a science project she and three worked on since October called Skateboard Science. The Xtreme Angels, as they call themselves, constructed a two-story ramp to demonstrate momentum, Summer said. The ultimate goal is to build a third level. “The fun part was seeing how we got it to work,” Summer said. “The hardest part so far is getting the pillars to stay up.” Rowen is a student of Marilyn Williams, the gifted-specialist teacher at Tavan who teaches STEM. Williams said she hopes students will see that science is not boring. She wants students to know scientists aren’t just men “in lab coats, indoors,” but that they actually work in the fi eld. “We want to start with a positive disposition towards science in elementary school, so when students get to middle and high school, they won’t be afraid,” Williams said.
