Page 31 March 2013 GEORDIE’S LOUNGE AT THE WRIGLEY MANSION 2501 E. Telawa Trail 602-955-4079 Mansion lounge brings piece of Chicago to Biltmore By Amanda Goossen Rich with history, the Wrigley Mansion sits atop a hill behind the Arizona Biltmore. Built between 1929 and 1931 by chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. as a 50th wedding anniversary gift to his beloved wife, Ada, the home was a site to be seen. It cost $250,000-$300,000 to build and was the largest home in the state. Nicknamed “La Colina Solana,” which means sunny hill, the home had 16,850 square feet, 24 rooms, and 12 bathrooms and was only meant to be a winter cottage. The Wrigleys, as owners of Wrigley Gum and the Chicago Cubs, had homes throughout the country, including Pasadena, Chicago, Lake Geneva, Wis., and Catalina Island. The Wrigley Mansion was decorated impeccably, with extravagant art and tile work. To this day, because of intense restoration efforts, the home holds the same beauty it did when the Wrigleys owned it. In 1960, after both William and Ada had passed away, the Wrigley Mansion was rezoned as part of the Biltmore hotel and become a perfect spot for hotel meetings and events. After passing through numerous hands during the years, the Wrigley Mansion was eventually purchased in 1992 by George A. Hormel, one of the heirs to the Hormel meat packing family. By then, the home had begun to show its age, and George was determined to restore the property to its original state. “Our goal for the Wrigley Mansion was, and still is, to be the premier private club in the Southwest,” Hormel said before he passed away Feb. 12, 2006, with his vision for the home complete. Geordie’s Restaurant & Lounge within the mansion is now a fi tting tribute to the late owner, serving great food and offering a gorgeous view. The home, because of its location, falls under the rules and regulations of the Arizona Biltmore Homeowners Association. These restrictions and regulations were imposed on the Wrigley Mansion when Western Savings owned the property. The bylaws require the property operate as a private club. The ambiguity about the membership is dif fi cult at times because it keeps visitors constantly wondering about Wrigley Mansion and their ability to stop by for an afternoon or evening out. Numerous memberships, however, can be purchased for as low as $3 per household, making the Wrigley Mansion and the restaurant something everyone can enjoy. Geordie’s Restaurant and Lounge is a perfect spot for quick appetizers or a rich, extraordinary meal. In the lounge, the very talented French- trained Chef Stephan Germanaud prepares items such as the Chicago-style Way beef hot dog, pizza of the week and brined, smoked chicken wings. In the dining room, he serves lobster ceviche; duck breast; handmade gnocchi with scallops and shrimp; chestnuts cappuccino with maple-smoked pork belly, and fi let mignon stuffed with lobster Continued on page 34 Italian Treat for 2... $ 44 00 ★ 2 Soup or Salad 2 Soup or Salad ★ + ★ 2 Dinner Entrees 2 Dinner Entrees ★ 20 entree choices included + ★ Full Bottle of Wine Full Bottle of Wine ★ from proprietor’s selection Open Mon–Sun 4:30 - 9:30pm 4231 E Indian School Rd • Phoenix 602.955.1213 • LaFontanellaPHX.com Live, Laugh and Love Dining Out!
