Page 28 March 2013 In conjunction with these workshops, SRP provides $350 grants to apply the information gained from the training. Snoddy said SRP is looking for programs that can be used for several years and can relate to more than one subject. Last year, St. Theresa’s Catholic School was one of 12 schools to receive a social studies grant. The $1,547 has been used to update the library and subscribe to the Time for Kids magazine for each student. “A resource like this combines current data in a book form and helps bring a familiarity and comfort with books but also having real-time current information,” said James Zorn, former director of fi nance and operations for St. Theresa’s. The grant application has been designed to be simple and quick to complete. “We know that grant writing can be overwhelming for educators, especially when they have enough to do in the classroom for preparing for the next day,” Snoddy said. In addition to helping students, Snoddy said the education grants provide a better education for their future workers and attracts people to Arizona. “SRP grew up with Arizona and Arizona grew up with SRP,” Snoddy said. “If we are providing education opportunities for our future leaders we are also providing for SRP.” More information and grant applications can be found at SRPnet.com/education/ grants. A clean-up of Arcadia Park is on tap, even though they have to get “down-and- dirty,” they’re excited, Tessmer said. “They make a party out of it. They have fun even getting dirty,” she said. For their February project, club members made valentines for their teachers and decorated the school, Smith said. Eighth-grader Payton George said, “It’s fun because it has a good impact. It helps me understand things more. “Projects are social time because we work together.” Smith said it’s inspiring for adults to see because they’re a great group of kids. The club started about 15 years ago and was called the Breakfast Bunch because it met in the morning before school. The club is growing all the time, as well as the kids and their level of interest, Smith said. “Even teenagers have an impact on the community,” Tessmer said. “These kids are on fi re. They are so motivated to make a difference.” Ingleside Continued from page 25 WE PAY MORE! Page 29 March 2013 Zoo plans big annual fundraiser By Shelby Slade The Phoenix Zoo will be rocking with local residents, food and beverage vendors and a local band March 22. The Rock the Zoo event, which is in its fourth year under this name, allows Valley residents to sample a variety of beverages and foods and have a great time while bene fi ting the zoo, said Linda Hardwick, the zoo’s public relations and marketing manager. “We are one of the largest nonpro fi t zoos in the country, so we rely on fundraising events, donations, ticket sales and concessions to maintain and operate the zoo and care for all the animals,” Hardwick said. “It is live music, beer and wine sampling, food and everyone has a great time.” This year’s event features the Rock Lobster, a local ‘80s cover band. Beverage vendors include Hensley Brewing Company, O.H.S.O. Eatery and NanoBrewery, Jerome Winery and Bitter Creek Winery. Food will be provided by some 12 local eateries, including Rubio’s, Raising Cane’s, Mojo Frozen Yogurt, Paradise Bakery and Pita Jungle. “Over the years we have developed really great relationships with several of the vendors and they really see it as a great event that spreads the word about their company and they really just like to participate as well as support the zoo,” Hardwick said. This will be the fi rst year for Arcadia- based O.H.S.O. Eatery and Nanobrewery. O.H.S.O., which stands for Outrageous Homebrewers Social Outpost, was opened in fall 2011 by Jon Lane. It is at 4900 E. Indian School Road. Lane had worked in the brewing business for years and decided to try his hand with his own company, he said. His offerings include orange pale ale, carrot cake beer, almond milk chocolate stout, key lime pie, nut brown, trail mix and black sphinx date beer. Lane said he heard about the event through other brewers and ads and signed up to create exposure for his company while supporting the zoo. “Hopefully somebody will like something that we do, whether it be our beer or attention to detail or what have you and hopefully they will give us a try,” Lane said. General admission tickets are $40 for nonmembers and $30 for members, and VIP admission is $70 for members and $60 for nonmembers. General admissions tickets allow attendees to receive a 3 oz. mug, 12 free samples, live music and food from several food trucks. Guests with VIP tickets get access to the VIP Lounge, which includes food from vendors and a cash bar. 2009 GMC YUKON DENALI XL AWD This Denali XL is finished in a light silver metallic exterior that compliments a full leather black interior with quad bucket seats.
