Page 57 February 2013 tires, torrential downpours, bumpy roads and two exhausted travelers. The authors met 17 years ago at a psychoanalytic seminar so boring, they said, they began to chit chat to pass the time and became friends. Their professional training is very different: Roher is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist while Schwartz is an analyst trained at the C.G. Jung Institute in Switzerland. About 10 years ago they decided they wanted to write a book and thought it should be about mothers and sons and fathers and daughters. However, navigating their own friendship sparked the notion of doing the book about couples. Both said they questioned their working relationship at times, wondering if they made a mistake and whether they should walk away and cut their losses. All long-term relationships go though great dif fi culties, they said. Roher and Schwartz call these times “crossroads.” A stressor has entered suddenly or gradually and partners are irritable, almost out of fuel and the stormy night leaves them feeling stranded and alone. The authors share ways to navigate the storm and get back to happier times. They cite a survey of divorced couples published by the Institute for American Values: nearly 70 percent wished they had tried harder to save their marriage. “Even when you are so angry about something your partner has done, it is imperative to remember that there is always something positive about that person. Nobody’s perfect,” Roher said. A good strategy, she said, is for the partners to make a list of the things they like about the other. Both partners are usually on the same journey together with the same destination, she said. “If you can remember your partner has positive qualities, and that you are building a history together, that is what will get you the distance,” she said. “When the car breaks down you both work together on how to get the car back on track, get back on the journey.” Both therapists are in long-term marriages. In a fast-paced and eye-opening novel (I’ve never read paranormal or fantasy novels), I enjoyed discovering a genre so many are diehard fans for and I honestly knew very little about. Three Good Things By Wendy Francis An unbreakable sisterly bond, the guidance of a mother who has been gone for years and the memory of the most important things she ever taught them, all come together to create the heart-warming and soul-soothing novel Three Good Things. Ellen McClarety is recently divorced and searching for a new life. Her sister, Lanie, who seems to have it all, is slowly coming apart at the seams. Together they embark on a journey of self-discovery, always remembering their mother’s mantra, “At the end of the day, you can always think of three good things that happened.” Children’s Books Who Was George Washington?
