Page 4 February 2013 Desert Botanical Garden a super place for Valentine By Dale Messmer It’s February’s holiday of love, where we honor our heart’s true passion. The Super Bowl. I dare say that at least as many women pay attention to the Super Bowl as men do to Valentine’s Day. How else does all that guacamole get made? (Although readership surveys and personal experience tell me more women than men read newspapers such as this one, I will tell the men in the audience that the year goes much more smoothly if you put some thought into Valentine’s Day.) Are you going to or hosting a Super Bowl party this year? I’m thinking I might host something, since the game is again being played in the country’s ultimate party town, New Orleans. Seems fi tting. As for Valentine’s Day, I think I’ll buy something at the Desert Botanical Garden. Flowers die, but a cactus says forever. Not kidding here. The biggest success I’ve had was the Valentine’s Day I went with a cactus instead of fl owers. She still talks about that plant all the time and waits all year for it to bloom. I heartily recommend a hearty, healthy cactus from the DBG. The Garden is a very special place. Have you been there lately? I think it’s a little like the Grand Canyon: we live so close, we never think to visit. They have these giant head sculptures on display (here’s one below). There’s one for every season of the year. They’re ... well, you can’t call them pretty, but they are very, very i n t e r e s t - ing. Now’s a good time to visit the G a r d e n , too. Nice place for a Valentine’s Day walk. And before it gets too hot. Although that cold spell in January made me think it was never going to be too hot again. I look forward to summer after that week or so. Enjoy the Garden if you go. And enjoy the Arcadia News . Thanks for reading. 50% OFF ENTIRE FRAMING ORDER www.mycustomframingstore.com 4110 E. Bell Rd., Phoenix 602-996-1882 4633 E.
