Page 31 February 2013 Arcadia volunteer still loves to make a difference By Josh Thrall Arcadia resident Jeannine Dahl once tended the physical and emotional wounds of the soldiers that poured into the combat support hospital at the Iraqi border where she served as an Army nurse during Operation Desert Storm. She cared for American and Iraqi soldiers. “We were fi rst in line to receive casualties,” Dahl said. “It could have been a terrible experience. It wasn’t.” Dahl fi nished her services as a lieutenant colonel. Today at 83, Dahl teaches psychiatric clinical skills at a state hospital through Chamberlain College on the weekends, works with the Service to the Armed Forces to support the families of deployed soldiers and has volunteered more than 10,000 hours with the American Red Cross. While her care during Desert Storm primarily was surgical, she performed another crucial service: psychiatric care. Soldiers who feared the chaplain would fi nd consolation in Dahl’s tent. “Every patient is a psych patient,” she said. When she returned from Saudi Arabia, Dahl noticed a contrast between the treatment of veterans returning from World War II and the treatment she received as a veteran. “I remember everyone going to the Red Cross and folding bandages to send to the front line,” Dahl said. “People are not as tuned in now.” With the Service to the Armed Forces, Dahl develops reconnection workshops in which families of deployed soldiers and veterans can receive coaching to help them deal with their changed lives. She said she is dedicated to raising public awareness about the sacri fi ces of soldiers in a time where military suicides are at a record high.
