Page 28 February 2013 By Cassandra Strauss A runner on the 48th Street greenbelt at dusk will pass families, bicyclists, dog walkers, couples strolling. Someone at dawn or in midafternoon will encounter much the same. So for recent Arcadia transplants, it might be dif fi cult to imagine that fewer than 15 years ago the space was a perilous concrete fl ood-control canal. “I remembered when it was an uncovered, very deep ditch that ran all the way down to the Salt River,” said Richard Rea, an Arcadia resident since 1955. Other residents talk of cars – and people – that would invariably careen into the steep, V-shaped concrete canal on the west side of the narrow, two-lane road. “There was always someone slipping and falling into it,” said Rob Reniewicki, cross country and track coach at Arcadia High School. When the construction of State Route 143 began in the early 1990s, the Maricopa County Flood Control District was forced to relocate the lower part of the Old Cross Cut Canal. The upper part of the canal, which ran between Osborn and Indian School roads, was set for a remodel, according to the county website. The former concrete ditch became a grassy park with a subterranean concrete pipe serving as fl ood control from other canals. Although the homes on both the east and west side of the then-canal were built starting in the late 1950s, the park wasn’t completed until 1999. Before the greenbelt, residents had to drive north to Indian School or south to Osborn to cross 48th Street. “Once the greenbelt was in, it melded the two communities,” Rea said. Margo Ingram, a Realtor with Reckling Properties, which specializes in the Arcadia neighborhood, said the advantages of the greenbelt are tangible. “It has become a huge asset to the community. You go from having an eyesore to having a park-like setting in some people’s backyards,” she said. Property values near 48th Street have risen in comparison to those further away, Ingram said. Any listing of a home near the park highlights the advantages. Others who knew the area before echo that sentiment. Raquel Rodriguez lives nearby and uses the park to train for marathons. “Every time I used to drive by, it was just so ugly,” Rodriguez said. “Now people get to come here and bike, walk their dogs.” Reniewicki said his teams use the 2-mile park to train, and that it is much safer than running along roads. “I think it’s been a very positive impact,” he said. “There’s always people out there.” Greenbelt replaced ditch, enhances neighborhood Redefined… Downtown Scottsdale Commercial & Residential, Interior & Exterior Plantscapes, Large-Scale And Exotic Specimen Plants, Unique Custom Containers From Around The World, Dried Floral Art, Vast Assortment Of Accessories, Full Service Design, Installation, Guaranteed Pearson Company 7022 East Main Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85251 (602) 840.6447 www.pearsonandcompany.com Comprehensive Maintenance Service

Things like gummy bears, licorice and caramel corn are more likely to stick to the tooth structure than chocolate, he said. “Believe it or not, a nice box of chocolates, especially soft chocolate, is easily dissolvable and less damaging,” Conrad said. “Chocolate can be brushed off easily.” As for drinks, red bad; white good. “One glass of red wine isn’t too much, but the continual of it can make teeth dingy and less attractive,” Conrad said. White wine and champagne don’t have the capacity to stain. There are several ways to reduce harm and keep teeth healthy. Conrad recommended brushing twice a day with a soft toothbrush and fl ossing once a day. Patel suggested using a mouthwash with fl uoride and chewing sugar-free gum. Although not as romantic as candy and red wine, there are alternative snacks not as damaging to teeth. Conrad suggested fruits, chips and dip, vegetables and anything that doesn’t stick to teeth. arcadiadaily.com arcadiadaily.com Proven Results ~ Unparalleled Service 602-743-7006 ~ shawna.warner@russlyon.com ~ www.shawnawarner.com Warner Shawna A unique opportunity to own property in a private, gated neighborhood in the heart of Arcadia.
