IN THE SAFEWAY CENTER 602-368-5330 / WWW.IRUNSHOP.COM A rcadia resident Andrew Heard is an ultrarun- ner. With a background in racing half and whole marathons, he now runs 50 to 100 mile races. And for the past eight years he’s been sharing his knowledge and experience with St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School and the children of the STA Run Club. The STA Run Club began over ten years ago when Catherine Wyman was looking to get children involved with the PF Chang’s Rock and Roll Marathon. On the Saturday before the annual marathon, kindergarteners through sixth graders run their race, completing 1.2 miles in the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Kids Rock marathon. Prior to the event the children must run 25 miles and complete a running form proving their ef- fort. Catherine Wyman started the STA Run Club to help the children with this goal. When Catherine’s two oldest children aged out of the race, Andrew volunteered. On Tuesday and Thurs- day mornings for approximately twelve weeks prior to the race, children gather on the St. Thomas field to practice. Each morning they run a mile, filling up their marathon sheet under Andrew’s guidance. At the end of their practice, which lasts from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., Andrew talks to the runners about nutrition, the importance of good footwear or breath- ing techniques. He uses his time not only to teach about running but about the other aspects of the sport. “This is a record year for us,” said Karen Heard, An- drew’s wife, who helps with the logistics and commu- nication of the STA Run Club. “We’ve had an average of about 25 kids each year,” said Karen. “This year we have 37.” “The students range from Pre-K to 6th grade. The one Pre-K student might be too young for the actual race this year but he’s determined to keep up with his older brother.” The commitment and determination seen not only on the faces of the runners but in their stance and abil- ity is obvious. More than half of the STA team are returning runners who take pride in what they are try- ing to accomplish. “Race day is fun for the kids. They get to go to the expo on Friday, the day before the race, and pick up their number. They get the same experience any mara- thon runner would have,” said Karen. At the end of the race, MOJO Yogurt waits at the finish line, ready to congratulate the kids for a job well done. “It’s a casual environment. Kids and parents, kids and siblings, they all run together. It’s a great time,” said Karen. This year the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Kids Rock marathon will be held on January 19 at Tempe Beach Park. The race begins at 9:00 a.m. ROCK ‘N’ ROLL: The STA Run Club Prepares for KIDS ROCK Arizona 6

Working to specifically design workout regiments for individual clients, within a group atmosphere, Bobby gets to know his clients and understand where they’re coming from. “We have a female MMA fighter and a 72-year-old woman in the same class. We specialize in people who are passionate about life and what they want,” said Bobby. Maybe that’s because Bobby is just as passionate as his clients. Bobby Kelly, although now a beloved Phoenix trainer, hasn’t always been the owner of a popular Phoenix gym. In Bobby’s previous life, he was the personal trainer to the President of the United States. In 2001, while working in his gym in Washington D.C., Bobby began training Dorothy Bush Koch, sister of George W. Bush. When Dorothy lost 80lbs, her brother was curious to how she accomplished such a goal. Bobby, while running his gym in D.C., began making CDs for his clients who had extremely busy schedules. His CDs had his voice recorded over music, talking to his clients. His voice would instruct and encourage as only Bobby can. After September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush could no longer run outside the White House as he had once enjoyed. He was looking for a way to stay fit without getting stuck in a rut. With a busy travel routine and a hectic lifestyle, a regular trainer was out of the question. That’s where Bobby Kelly came in. Bobby created unique and specific personal training CDs for the 43rd President of the United States. He trained him remotely for four years, between 2001 and 2005, keeping him in shape with his passion, his voice and his masterful routines.
