Page 4 January 2013 Don’t think too much, you’ll just end up with no space By Dale Messmer It’s been mentioned often in this space – it’s dif fi cult to write something one day that won’t be read until more than a week later. Such is the life of writing on a monthly deadline. It’s especially dif fi cult at this time of year, though. I haven’t wrapped packages. You’ve wrapped up the holidays. I haven’t even picked up my son at the airport yet – only three more days! – and your holidays are a memory. Unless you can’t remember New Year’s Eve, I guess. So what shall we write about? I can point out all the good stuff in this edition of the paper, as usual, but I’ll let you fi nd that out on your own this month. I thought maybe I’d write about how much I hate telephones, but if you’ve ever tried to call me you already know that, and if you haven’t, I fi gure you don’t care. Of course, writing about something you would care about takes a better writer than I, so forget that. Thought I’d write about music. I envy people who get to write about music for a living, and one of the best parts of deadline is selecting the music that I’ll listen to in order to survive the ordeal. Eric Clapton this month. Good jazz came in a close second. Thought about writing a few words on last year’s best emails from readers. Not the funniest or the most complimentary, but the best story ideas. Or maybe the nastiest, although thankfully I don’t get many of those. Thought about writing a little something to public-relations people who seem to think sending me a story idea 12 times is a good way to get it into the paper, but they wouldn’t listen anyway. They’d just keep calling me. Thought about New Year’s resolutions until I looked it up and realized I wrote about that last year. Still don’t make the things myself. Have you broken any of yours yet? Then there was the idea of writing about baseball. January is the Sahara of the baseball season, but M.A. (my most loyal reader) says I write about baseball too much as it is. All that thought, as you can see, took up most of my space. Now I only have three more lines to work with. One is to say thank you for reading the Arcadia News . And anyone can write one sentence to fi nish up the fi rst column of the year. HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY NEW YEAR! RESOLVE TO REPLACE OLD EQUIPMENT. RESOLVE TO REPLACE OLD EQUIPMENT. Without a health care agent, the law allows a great number of people to make emergency medical decisions on your behalf. With a health care agent, there is one person, or an alternate, who can make all medical and mental health decisions. Arizona statutes direct that cremation or burial preferences be listed in the health care power of attorney. Your agent can make sure you have the cremation or burial you wish.
