Page 33 January 2013 Restaurant group fi nds another winner in Federal Pizza FEDERAL PIZZA 5210 North Central 602-246-7555 By Amanda Goossen Eleven years ago, Craig and Kris DeMarco and Lauren and Wyatt Bailey began what would become one of Phoenix’s most beloved restaurant companies. Upward Projects, in historically relevant buildings that house neighborhood restaurants the community would enjoy, has found a way to connect with people and feed them what they desire. Their most recent project, Federal Pizza, follows in the footsteps of Windsor & Churn as well as Postino Central. Located in the old First Federal Savings and Loan building, Federal Pizza is a casual and comfortable spot for groups to gather and friends to chat. Like all of Upward Projects restaurants there is something inherently “hip” about the atmosphere. Something that makes Federal Pizza different than its nearby siblings is the take-out window, which gives those craving pizza a choice to pick up their meal as well as their beer and wine. The beer and bottled-wine lists developed by beverage director Brent Karlicek are seasonal and progressive with local and regional beers – with an emphasis on small-batch craft selections – on tap. The pizza at Federal is most de fi nitely something to write home about. A variety of out-of-this-world combinations such as the At Last (which features broccolini, roasted corn, Fresno chilies, basil and lemon) or the Sweet Potato (sweet potato, sage and ricotta) liven up a basic American staple. The Casanova (prosciutto, dates, ricotta, arugula and pecorino) as well as the Meatball round out a pizza menu nothing short of phenomenal. With the masterful bread genius MJ Coe behind the pizza dough and fl avor combinations, diners simply can’t go wrong. For those who are a bit fearful, a list of ingredients is available to create your own masterpiece. Take note of the appetizers and salads on the menu. Corn coins (corn on the cob with fennel, herbs and pecorino), the meatball trio, the Little Gem Caesar and the Federal Chop are all de fi nite winners. Not to mention the list of dessert options. Any place offering Bombolini, warm doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce, to complete an already spectacular meal is top notch in my book. Craig DeMarco and Upward Projects have done it again, using the concept to create a place where you want to be, with food you want to eat.
