Page 30 January 2013 Resolutions extend to travel, too By Kaley Kalil It’s a new year, it’s a new you and there are oodles of new places waiting to be discovered by the new you. Next to working out and eating healthier, why not add traveling more to your 2013 New Year resolutions? Here are a few ideas to make your travels this year your best yet. Travel off the beaten path Try visiting less crowded, more remote areas than Mission Beach in July. Venture somewhere you’ve never been, pack up the kids and create your own journey. Before the days of Lonely Planet travel guides and TripAdvisor.com, travel enthusiasts actually designed their own itineraries and drew out plans on maps. Take a deep breath, turn your navigation system off, buy yourself an old-fashioned, paper map and attempt to reach the campgrounds without TomTom or Siri. Who knows? Maybe you and the kids will stumble along some places worth exploring along the way. Incorporate exercise into your vacations Instead of following suit in this year’s dieting craze, why not suit up, get out there and enjoy the great outdoors? Make 2013 the year you and the boys fi nally hike Yosemite National Park, or when you and your wife make the hike to Havasu Falls down in the Grand Canyon. By including more hiking, walking and other outdoor activities throughout your trip, you’ll not only feel and look great, but you’ll most likely see and experience more as well. What’s not to like about all that? Be fl exible Instead of stressing over staying on schedule or fi tting everything in, try to relax this year and be fl exible with your travel plans. Welcome the element of surprise and don’t be afraid to slow things down if the group is enjoying a particular activity or place and wishes to stay longer than you had originally planned. Keeping an open mind and an adventurous attitude will result in the best possible trip for all. Pack less This is so much easier said than done, I know. But, think about it. When was the last time you actually wore everything you packed in that big suitcase? Have you ever worn everything you packed in your suitcase? If you’re like me (and most other travelers), the answer is, “never.” Break the cycle. Less stuff means less stress, less of a mess and less bulk to carry along the way.
