During the past eight years, they have traveled all over the country and throughout Asia, South America and Europe. “Our travel obsession started immediately after we were married,” Kelly said. “We began traveling monthly the month following our honeymoon.” Having both grown up in Phoenix, Kelly and Bobby cherish fond, family memories of visiting Disneyland throughout their childhood. Now, they have annual park passes for Disneyland and Disneyworld. Page 29 January 2013 Neighbor Continued from page 28 “We have taken dozens of weekend trips to Disneyland, and we have made traditions of spending Easter and New Year’s Eve at Disneyworld.” Their most recent overseas trip was in June, when they took a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale and sailed to Jamaica, Haiti and Cozumel. In Jamaica, they hiked up the Dunn’s River Falls and on some beautiful trails. In Haiti, they spent time at the beach and hiked through the mountains in Labadee. In Cozumel, they took an underground tour in Playa del Carmen to the Rio Secreto. “We hiked 100 feet below the ground, wearing special wetsuits and headlamps,” Kelly said. “This underground cave system was fi lled with stalactites and stalagmites and was unlike anything we had ever seen.” It’s what happened on the boat, however, that was most memorable. “Our ship’s captain spotted a raft with fi ve people inside that had been lost at sea for four straight days while fl eeing from Cuba,” Kelly said. “The raft was no bigger than a pool raft you would buy from Target. It was unbelievable. The rescue was successful and took several hours. “Just an hour or so after that rescue, my husband and I were sitting on our balcony and saw another raft fl oat right past us. We called the emergency number, made the report and our ship came to a halt again. It was quite an eventful day at sea.” Upon their return to Ft. Lauderdale, they rented a car and drove to Key West, where they enjoyed sunsets at Mallory Square. “We love to cruise,” Kelly said. “We have been on approximately 20 cruises since we have been married and we fi nd that cruising is the most relaxing and easiest way to travel.” With quirky travel traditions such as seeing Jimmy Buffet in concert across the nation and packing their Travelocity roaming gnome along for every wild adventure they tackle, the couple knows how to have a good time just about anywhere. “Whether it’s getting last-minute tickets to a concert in Florida, hiking the Grand Canyon, or popping over to Disneyland or Disneyworld, we never hesitate to jump at any opportunity to travel,” Kelly said. So, how do these travel enthusiasts pick their next destination? “ The Travel Channel has been responsible for a majority of our vacations,” Kelly said. “We are Travel Channel fanatics and always watch the show for ideas for our next vacation. Key West remains one of our very favorite places to visit.” Other favorite destinations for the Schurmans include St. Maarten, Maui and Assisi, Italy. One day, they plan to cross Bora Bora and Germany’s Oktoberfest off their wish list. “We love to explore the world and gain new experiences,” Kelly said. “Traveling is so easy to do and is so rewarding. The stories and memories you come home with are priceless. The more we travel, the more we realize just how small the world can feel. We encourage everyone we know to be adventurous and travel.” Kelly is a kindergarten teacher at St. Thomas and Bobby is a business development manager at Honeywell. Their next trip is planned for this month, when they will run half marathons at both Disneyland and Disneyworld. By completing both races in the same year, they will each earn Disney’s Coast-to- Coast medal. Traveled lately or know someone who has? Contact Kaley at kaley.kalil@gmail.com.
