Page 26 January 2013 New York ballet school to hold auditions in Arcadia By Audrey Luzader The School of American Ballet will be in Phoenix in January to hold auditions for intermediate and advanced students for its summer course in New York. Amy Bordy, director of public relations, recruiting and outreach, said the summer course is fi ve weeks and offered only to new students not in the year-round program. She said the school hopes to fi nd students with potential to join the longer program. Auditions will be Jan. 27 at Ballet Arizona, 3645 E. Indian School Road, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for dancers ages 10 to 18. The School of American Ballet is the of fi cial school of New York City Ballet, Bordy said. “It’s the starting point for anyone who has that dream of becoming a professional dancer,” she said. “It’s an excellent way to start that journey.” Students should arrive about an hour prior to their audition times to register. The schedule is: 11 a.m.-noon for 10-11 year olds; Noon-1:30 p.m. for 12-14 year olds; 1:30-3 p.m. for 15-18 year olds. Students need to bring a copy of their birth certi fi cates to the audition. Girls must bring toeshoes. The objective of the summer course not only is to fi nd potential students for the year-around program but to give students the opportunity to dance with the faculty, Bordy said. Many faculty members have a background that includes professional careers in dancing, she said. Bordy said the school recruits nationally and internationally with auditions in 19 cities in the U.S. and an audition each in Paris and Madrid. “We get students who might drive from three to four hours away,” she said. About 2,000 people will audition, and the school accepts 200 students into the summer course, Bordy said. Kay Mazzo, co-chairwoman of faculty and a teacher at the school who oversees the daily training of students, said applicants are judged on areas of fl exibility and musicality. She said energy and an interest for what they’re doing really makes students stand out from others. “You look at them and you know they’re listening and trying their hardest,” Mazzo said. “You know they’re going to retain things.” No speci fi c number per age group will be selected. “We want to take every student we feel should be studying at our school,” Mazzo said. Bordy said the school has an extensive scholarship program that includes a $1.75 million budget for its year-round and summer programs. She said about 30 merit scholarships are given out yearly. The Phoenix auditions include tryouts for a two-week program the school will hold in Irvine, Calif. this summer. Bordy said this day program is key to exposing students and building relationships with them at a young age. The California program is for ages 10 to 14. Preregistration for the fi ve-week course is available on SAB’s website at SAB.org/ summercourse. The application fee is $35. Page 27 January 2013 Hills along with Enge. Janiga, a skilled woodworker, built the library from recycled materials. He said he expects it to last for generations because of the durability of the oak he used. He said he would be happy to work with other people on Little Free Libraries. As well as helping make the Shepherd of the Hills Little Free Library, Thomas is constructing a Free Little Library of her own to put in her front yard. She said she is using an old pie safe she is “refurbishing.” Many times people will dedicate their Free Little Library to someone special, and Thomas has chosen to dedicate her Free Little Library to her grandmother, Carolee. Her name is on the pie safe. Because she lives near Arcadia High School, Thomas said she hopes students as well as people in the neighborhood will walk by and use her library. More information on the libraries can be found at LittleFreeLibrary.org. Max McCauley is a seventh-grader at Christ Lutheran School. Libraries Continued from page 24 One appointment. Expert doctors.
