Page 24 January 2013 It looks like a birdhouse but it’s Little Free Library Story and photos by Max McCauley If you have been by Shepherd of the Hills Church on Lafayette just west of 56th Street, you might have seen a box on the front lawn that looks like a large birdhouse, but this one is fi lled with books. The box is part of the new reading movement started by Todd Bol and Rick Brooks in Wisconsin in 2009. Little Free Libraries, as they are called, are packed with free books; the idea being a person will take a book and put another in its place. About 3,000 Little Free Libraries are in all 50 states and in about 40 other countries. Nola Enge, Jill Thomas and Bill Janiga brought the Little Free Library at Shepherd of the Hills to Arcadia. That library gets a lot of traf fi c from the preschool, the church congregation and people who walk by on Lafayette. Enge, director of The Hills preschool, said it is thrilling for her students to know their books are being enjoyed by little friends they haven’t met. The preschoolers are having fun noticing when people stop for a book, she said. They see folks on bikes and in minivans with children just picked up at nearby Hopi Elementary, Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center and Veritas Preparatory Academy. They see seniors walking by to drop a book. Enge and Thomas discovered the Little Free Library while on separate vacations last summer. Enge said she fi rst saw a Little Free Library in her hometown of Madison, Wis. She said in Madison there are many libraries made from reclaimed wood from dairy barns. Thomas fi rst saw a Free Little Library in Detriot Lakes, Minn.
