In January, sales of diet food and gym memberships soar as people begin to work toward their New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Unfortunately, many give up their efforts after a month or two, discouraged by slow progress or overwhelmed by the task. Here are some tips to help set you on the path to a long-term, successful weight-loss regimen. Set realistic goals One reason many people don’t meet their weight loss goals is because they expect too much, too soon. It’s important to set realistic expectations, such as a 1- to 2-pound weight loss per week. Over time, this small weekly weight loss can signi fi cantly improve your health. Likewise, adding exercise to your schedule in smaller doses can help you ease into a more active life and set you up for success. See a dietician Any good weight-loss program includes a healthy diet. However, a lot of people don’t know where to begin. A dietician can give you tips for making simple changes to the way you eat that can have a big impact on your waistline. Even one visit to a dietician can offer lasting bene fi ts. Seek support Chances are one or more of your friends or family members also have resolved to lose weight in the New Year. It’s a great idea to fi nd a weight- loss partner so you can offer each other support and encouragement when you’re facing challenges, and you can celebrate your successes together when you reach milestones. You also can fi nd great resources online, from healthy-recipe websites to online calorie-counting tools. Smartphones also offer a wide range of apps to assist you in your efforts. If you need a higher level of support, there are many effective weight- loss programs that can keep you motivated and on track as you work toward your goal weight. Be kind to yourself Remember, you don’t have to be perfect. There will be times when you indulge in a favorite meal or dessert, and that’s OK. As long as you’re making good choices the majority of the time, you’ll continue to make your way toward reaching – and maintaining – a healthy weight. Cranston At the start of a new year, many people take the opportunity to re fl ect on past experiences and set future goals. As we evaluate where we are and where we’re going, it’s a good idea to analyze potential future problems and strategize ways to minimize their impact. Part of this process should be a review of your insurance. Generally, insurance policies fall into two categories: fi rst-party and third-party. First-party insurance policies pay for injuries or losses suffered by you. Examples of fi rst-party insurance policies are health-care insurance, life insurance and property insurance.
