The holidays, the New Year, traveling, time with family and friends, the great weather and so on. Yet for some, it is quite the opposite. Each year around this time, the courts often see a rise in protective orders such as orders of protection and injunctions against harassment. Maricopa County’s 25 Justice Courts issue more than 7,000 protective orders each year. Handling these types of cases often is one of the most dif fi cult tasks for a justice of the peace. As with many things judges do, issuing these protective orders does not get any easier through the years. The bottom line is that it’s always sad to see an individual come into court requesting orders of protections against other family members or a spouse. But as judges we fi nd solace in the hope we are protecting individuals from a situation that could potentially end very badly if left unchecked. Not to mention that it takes a brave soul to come into court to request such an order in the fi rst place. If you or someone you know is in need of a protective order to stop a potentially bad situation from getting worse, do not hesitate to contact the local justice, municipal, or superior court.
