Page 57 December 2012 Cooler weather brings on increase of hiking thefts By Ellen Kuni Camelback hikers are loving the cooler fall temperatures. So are thieves. According to Cmdr. Alan Laitsch, Paradise Valley police spokesman, the arrival of fall marks a signi fi cant increase in hikers at Camelback, as well as a signi fi cant increase in auto break-ins by thieves targeting these hikers’ cars. Camelback is a favorite hiking spot for Valley residents. The mountain offers two main parking areas, a lot on the west side at the Echo Canyon trailhead and street parking along North Invergorden Road on the east side at the Cholla trailhead. Laitsch says that neither parking area is safer than the other. They have experienced break-ins on both sides. “The thieves know where to go, and they’re going to do that based on the weather patterns,” said Laitsch. Jamie Harnes, 33, is a frequent Camelback hiker and started locking up her belongings after witnessing evidence of a break-in. “I … just saw a (broken) window, glass everywhere,” said Harnes. “A few times I’ve come here (and) I’ve seen it, so I just make sure to put everything in the trunk.” Harnes’ theft-prevention technique is exactly what Laitsch recommends. “We have caught burglars who literally walk up to cars and look in the vehicles,” he said. “If they see valuables, they smash the windows.” But Laitsch knows that the thieves are smart. “Before you even leave your home, put your wallet or purse in the trunk,” Laitsch said. He also says that even if you forget to stow your goods before leaving home, it’s better to stop at a gas station and transfer things into the trunk then rather than stashing it once you arrive. He says crooks are watching cars as they arrive, so if someone puts their belongings in a trunk right after they park, the thieves will know what they have and where they put it. Laitsch encourages people to be aware of others in the parking areas and near the mountain. “It’s pretty easy to spot hikers and it’s pretty easy to spot someone who’s not there to hike,” said Laitsch. Even though the Paradise Valley police are making routine patrols of Camelback, Laitsch understands that they might not see everything. So, if a hiker spots something suspicious, he wants them to call. “We would rather come and check that out,” Laitsch said, “than come over there and fi nd three cars broken into.” A company you like and trust.
