Often pipes, but they haven’t found any bodies!” said Rea. There are two water lines underneath Camelback — a 20-inch pipe and a 16- inch pipe. To allow construction, the valves needed to be shut off, but only one could be shut off at a time so that residents could still have a fl ow of water, Ohler said. She said when turning the 20-inch valve back on, it broke and fl ooded a couple of homes. They couldn’t shut off the 16-inch valve until the 20-inch valve was fi xed. The city took care of it, but it delayed the project for about a week. “The problem is that these are old systems,” Wegner said. “Decades old. They break because of age.” Another delay was the discovery of a fi ber-optic cable. When pouring concrete for the structures, it takes two to three weeks for it to “cure.” In addition, there are other projects at other intersections that this project has no control over, Ohler said. Pierson Construction is using two crews to try to speed up the process. Residents were concerned that some of the tall Eucalyptus trees along the east side of Arcadia Drive would be killed, but there was only minimal trimming done. Wegner said that the project will be adding curbs but still preserving and maintaining the Arcadia character. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County is in close contact with the Arcadia Camelback Mountain Neighborhood Association, which sends out emails so that residents are aware of what is happening and which streets will be closed. Page 53 December 2012 ‘Chocolat’ is the selection for December Book Club By Amanda Goossen Believe it or not, the holidays are here, and what better to wrap in ribbon and bows than a book. My favorite gifts are those special little items, which were well-thought-out gifts, not merely presents to put under the tree. This year I hope you give books, to your best friends, family and little kiddos in your life. Especially the kids. Let them take some time away from the electronic devices to hold a book, breath in the pages and witness the true wonder of all the author and illustrator meant for them to see. To encourage this thought of giving, I’m supplying you with a great list of gift ideas for the children who will love the creative and fun books that have recently graced my desk. The Arcadia News Book Club is going strong and growing each and every month. In November we had 16 of our regulars, as well as four new attendees.
