Page 4 December 2012 All I want for Christmas is my two-pack of Twinkies By Dale Messmer It’s not exactly the same as the Grinch stealing Christmas, but the Twinkies are going away. Hostess and the union members who make the goodies are at an impasse. The company, twice in bankruptcy, won’t emerge this time. It is going to liquidate and call it quits. They’ll eventually, no doubt, sell the brands they own to someone else, but in the short-term, there are no Sno Balls this Christmas unless you hurry to stock up. Once the market sells out, it’ll be a while before you can Ho Ho. For some of us, there’s a long Hostess history. I have a scar above my left eye from when, as a child, I bent over to pick up a Twinkie I had dropped and rapped my head on the corner of a coffee table. Most of my Hostess memories are better than that. And even though I haven’t eaten one of their products in quite a while, it doesn’t seem right that I won’t be able to, even if I want one. It’s bad enough they use music from my youth to sell cars. Now they take away Twinkies. Getting old can be no fun. I’m aware that Hostess products aren’t high on most people’s holiday sweets list. So we have a great collection of recipes this month, starting on page 38, of some favorites from your neighbors. I know there’s a couple that will fi nd their way into my oven. Some things never change, of course. The Arcadia High School swimming program, for example. The boys won another state title this year. Details on page 58. Then there are the ever-present construction projects to interfere with your daily commute. There’s a doozy going on in the neighborhood to upgrade storm drains. Page 35. And there’s the debate about whether I should wish you a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. OK, maybe not a debate so much as a question in my mind. A Twinkie and a cup of hot chocolate would help me decide, but I’m nearly to the end of my deadline and can’t go Hostess hunting. I have to make up my mind. I’m going with Merry Christmas. If you celebrate something else, be assured I’m wishing you as happy a holiday as possible. Oh, and a safe and wonderful New Year, too. Thanks for reading the Arcadia News .
